Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm using a dell inspiron mini-9. It has a small, wide screen.

When I choose to view the details while packages are installing I can't see the whole window and can't reposition/resize it help this.

A screen shot is attached

I cannot reproduce this bug. At all stages of the update process (downloading the packages and installing them) the update screen perfectly fits the screen.

Looking at your screenshot I wonder if you are using the custom Dell-mini version of Ubuntu (that comes preinstalled) or you installed a generic version of Ubuntu... If the latter is true I would not be surprised the panel doesn't fit.

Please provide more info about the version of ubuntu you are using.

From #335431 I see you are running Jaunty, which obviously mean that you are not running the custom version of ubuntu for Dell-mini (based on Hardy).

Marking invalid.

Hi,

I must admit, I'd never heard of the Dell mini project. As you say, I'm running the latest vanilla Ubuntu. Surely the Update Manager window should fit on any reasonable screen size in stock Ubuntu?

The dell-mini project manages the custom distribution that comes preinstalled with the dell mini. This distro is based on the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and thus is strictly designed to accommodate the small screen and the low power intel architecture. The generic version of Ubuntu is not designed with that in mind.

So for this reason, your bug is marked invalid for the dell mini project. However it is still open for the update manager in vanilla ubuntu. Eventually if you really need to run Jaunty on the mini to install the netbook remix version of it.

This is also affecting me in Karmic.

The specific issue is that the 'Details' pull-down opens out at a fixed vertical size. If it just pulled down to the bottom of the visible screen, then it would cope with varying screen sizes, and could be scrolled through on smaller screens. A more intelligent logic would be to pull-down at a fixed size, unless this would take it off the screen, in which case it just resize to fit the screen vertically.

As it stands, it is very difficult to get down to read the bottom line of the terminal output on a smaller screen.

You can adjust the font size of the Details pull-down in the Synaptic Package Manager. In there, go to Settings => Preferences => Columns and Fonts => Use custom terminal font.
I will not close the bug, because
1. The default font should be small enough to make the window fit, and
2. You should be able to alter these settings from within Update Manager, possibly by pointing to the same settings as Synaptic.

Oh, I forgot:

3. When I _do not_ choose a custom terminal font, it should use the default font as specified in the Appearance settings. As it is now, both Synaptic and Update Manager _always_ use a custom font, wether you like it or not.
