Bug Description

I have as Sony VAIO VGN-FW245 laptop with the Intel GMA 4500 Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset Family and I had to use the SAFE (VESA) graphics mode to run Ubuntu 8.10 from CD and then when I installed 8.10, I was left with only two resolutions: 640x480 & 800x600. My display has a 16:9 ratio (1600x900 Widescreen resolution) and 800x600 is not an acceptable resolution. I would like a driver that lets me use 1600x900 or come close to that resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first distro and with the exception of this graphics problem, my migration to Ubuntu from Vista has been smooth and an overall
pain-free experience. Most everything has "just worked" from jump.

Running Ubuntu 8.10 x64 w/ all Updates on:

Sony VAIO VGN-FW245 w/ Core2Duo t5800 @ 2.0GHz w/4GB RAM
and integrated Intel GMA 4500 Mobile 4 Series Chipset Family

Thanks in advance!

Found solution in Bug Report 268615. My lappy is now running at 1600x900 and I have many other lower resolution choices if I so desire.

Hi tabun,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

hi everyone!

i have the same video card as you and i've definitely solve the problem: the matter was that those drivers were a bit old, so i just upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha5) and now all is fine!!

an advice: is an alpha, so is a bit unstable but it works well.

waiting your answers

Yeah, I can't remember what I did exactly, but it involved changing a couple of values in a config file and everything worked fine under Intrepid. Thanks!
