Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Hi,
I'm a non-technical 'noob'.

I tried to run Ubuntu 8.10 from the live CD on my desktop but it would just not go past the loading black screen with text. However, the live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 ran very well on my Desktop. I then went on to install it with my previous OS XP (Dual boot). Everything worked great except my Lexmark X 5470. I then 'upgraded' to Ubuntu 8.10. I was very happy to see 'everything work' so well. It is when I rebooted that I got the message "Ubuntu has to start in low graphics mode". I get the message:
"(EE) intel(0): No valid modes.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration"

The sad part is Ubuntu 8.10 worked great immediately after the 'upgrade' however, it started this problem after its first reboot. Please help.

I tried (after a Google search) some help given on your forum, lauchpad as well as the web, but have not got this problem fixed yet.

Code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and when complete use the command to reboot Code:

sudo reboot

I also tried Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This too didn't help

I just remembered some details which may be helpful.

During the 'upgrade' from 8.04 to 8.10 there were 2 error message both as a 'pop-up' and also in that 'black box with white text' which gives information on installation. However, I quickly forgot about it as everything worked after installation till the first reboot.

Thanks!

Hi !

The hardware specs are:

Intel (R0 Core 2 Duo E 6750 2.66 Ghz
2 GB RAM

Intel (R) G33/31 Express Chipset Family Intel (R) GMA 3100

I thought a the fact that I have installed all the software 'updates' might help.

Your help is keenly awaited & will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Hi!
Thanks for the help.

As requested I am attaching the output of `lspci -vvnn' to this comment.

I will attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue in the next comment as I don't know how to attach two attachments to a single comment.

I do not know how to respond to the statement on the top of this page.
"This bug isn't linked to gnome-utils (Ubuntu). Would you like to report it here as well?" Please let me know if I need to report this in gnome-utils (Ubuntu).

Thanks again

Hi!

Here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue attached as "/var/log/LATEST.Xorg.0.log" to this comment.

I do not think I have made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Please let me know if there is a way to check.

I appreciate your time & help.

Tell me about your monitor. How is it connected? What is its make and model? Please run the following command when it's attached and add the output file:

Hi!
1) The monitor I have is a Samsung 920NW with the following specs:

Display Screen Size 48cm (19)
Resolution 1440 x 900
Brightness 300cd/㎡
Contrast Ratio 700:1
Response time 5ms

2) It is connected by a VGA cable (15pin D-sub)

3) Make & model - Samsung 920NW

4) The monitor was attached when I ran the command "xrandr --verbose > xrandr.txt" in the 'terminal'. I did not get an output.
However, when I ran "xrandr --verbose" which gave me some results that is attached to this comment as "-desktop:~$ xrandr --verbose.txt". I then ran "xrandr.txt" but got "command not found". Please let me know if I need to do anything else.

5) This might be of help in troubleshooting and locating the problem.
I used Ubuntu 8.04.2 i386 Live CD and this monitor worked fine.
I used Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD and only got a black screen with white text.
I still installed Ubuntu 8.10 and the monitor worked fine initially, until the first reboot.
I later tried Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 4 Live CD and the monitor was still in low-graphics mode. (Needless to say I did not install that)
However, Ubuntu 8.04.2 i386, Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 4 Live CD works great with my Acer laptop 5920 that has a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100.

Thanks

The problem has been resolved with one of the Ubuntu updates.

I recently downloaded a few updates from Ubuntu. On re-booting the computer, the screen showed "Automatic correction" and a bar which 'grew' from Left to right (0 to 100%). My Wallpaper had shrunk & I guessed I the resolution had improved. On checking 'System' then 'Preferences' & then 'Screen Resolution' it was '1024*768 (4:3). Instead of 800*600. Now the graphics are great.

Thank you!

Hi Bryce,

The problem resolved on its own. I thought it was the Ubuntu updates that solved it. But now I feel it was a 'loose connection' at the Samsung Monitor. The CPU is attached to the monitor via a 15 feet extention cable.

I now on hindsight feel on (mis) handleing the cables the problem had occured. As tightning the screws of the cable to the back of the monitor solves the problem.

Once again, thanks for all the good work you guys are doing.

Best regards,
Lijo
