Bug Description

After upgrading my system to a newer kernel it does not boot. hangs on "Begin: waiting for root file system"

The Kernel that DOES work is: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-8-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro notsc clocksource=hpet

(Yes I edited the option to start from /dev/sda1. Also tried notsc and clocksource=hpet on al kernel versions. But to no avail for the newer versions.)

Version NOT working: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-12-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro notsc clocksource=hpet

Also NOT working: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-11-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro notsc clocksource=hpet

openeyedev@rportier-laptop-01:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

machine is a Lenovo laptop model 3000 N200

A few lines before the system hangs on waiting for root file system I see: marking tsc unstable due to tsc halts in idle. This amazes me, because it seems the notsc option in menu.lst has no effect then?

Hi Ronald,

What happens if you don't pass any kernel parameters when you try to boot (ie remove the "notsc" and "clocksource=hpet" options).

Also, care to test the latest pre-release for Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha 4). It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel and it would be good to know if this issue still exists. You should be able to test booting with a LiveCD - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hello Leann,

I tested the newer kernel without the boot options and it did not make any
difference.

Coming weekend I will try the Jaunty release. I am presently not at a site
where I can download or burn cd images.

Kind regards,
Ronald

Hello

I burned a LiveCD Jaunty 9.04 Alpha 5 and reboot with the LiveCD :

1/ when i boot with the option "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" everything work fine. All the hard disk are OK.
2/ When i boot with the option "Boot from first hard disk", i got the same problem.

Hello Lean,

I tested with the live CD form Jaunty and then the laptop starts. However
when I use the lice CD for Ubuntu 8.10 the laptop also starts.

When I wait quit a long time on the message that the system is waiting for
the root file system, in the end a message is shown and the system drops
into a really limited shell with a message saying "Gave up waiting for
root device".

So there might be some problem for the newer kernels to communicate with
the hard drive. Which would explain why starting from the live CD goes
without problem.

Is there a way to install the newer jaunty kernel - without doing a full
upgrade to this Alpha OS version now? Then I can test the newer kernel on
the hard drive.

Kind regards,
Ronald

Hello,

I added the jaunty repositories to mij sources list.

After sudo aptitude update I found no 2.6.28-8 kernel. But I did find a
2.6.28-1-rt kernel. But only two of the usual three parts:
linux-headers-2.6.28-1-rt
linux-headers-2.6.28-1-rt-generic This one is not present
linux-image-2.6.28-1-rt

Starting from this kernel very soon crashes with 'Kernel Panic - not
synching - attempted to kill init!'

So no solution here...

Where did you get the 2.6.28-8 kernel from?

Kind regards,
Ronald
