The number of updates is not important enough to be part of the most prominent text in the window.

It would be nice to show the number in smaller text, though. I suggest a string of the form "14 to install" at the lower left, opposite the "Check" and "Install Updates" buttons.

Because we are in user interface freeze this now requires a freeze exception:

I would like to ask for a user interface freeze exception for the change outlined. The rational is that the amount of updates is useful information to the user and that its no longer visibile in the UI with the new text. The change is small and unobtrusive

Is there a way to use the previously existing string(s) instead of introducing a new one?

Who came up with that idea? :S

Why should the number of updates not be important? Why did the number of updates have to go away? It's only a number. Most of the time it takes up only one or two charachters. I don't think someone will experience any inconvenience, because of the number of updates. I really miss the feature of showing the number of updates and can't imagine why it had to go. Please bring it back.

How does any other package, even notify-osd, change the requirements of this package to display relevant information to it's users? What if users of this package don't use notify-osd?

Removing information from a dialog designed to give the user enough data to make an informed choice about software updates makes no sense. The number of updates, the size of the updates (as is displayed now) and the last time the archive was checked are all very relevant when choosing whether to hit the "install updates" button or close the manager altogether.

This bug was fixed in the package update-manager - 1:0.124.2

---------------
update-manager (1:0.124.2) karmic; urgency=low

  * UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py:
    - make it clearer if a package is a new install
      (as opposed to a upgrade) - thanks to Cody Sommerville
    - show amount of selected updates in the UI (LP: #330439)
