Bug Description

With uxa enabled, jaunty boots to blue screen with movable cursor then hangs. Keyboard dead altogether. Mouse keys inactive. Top & bottom white panels were there but no response to anything. Only key that works is power off.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "Intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
        Option "ModeDebug" "true"
        Option "FallbackDebug" "true"
EndSection

jaunty Xubuntu all updates as of today Feb 16, 2009:
Linux version 2.6.28-7-generic (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-3ubuntu2) ) #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 9 15:43:21 UTC 2009
IBM Think Centre A30 2 gHz Celeron 1 gb memory
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)

Xorg.0.log from failing boot attached. (multi boot system, booted another image to mount & view failure logs)

Anything else? Reproducable at will.

Marking as wishlist since we've decided not to ship UXA for Jaunty due to stability concerns such as this bug.
I would also encourage you to forward this bug upstream to bugzilla.freedesktop.org so it gets investigated.

Hi jerry,

I notice this was originally reported against 2.6.1, however we've released with 2.6.3, which has numerous UXA bug fixes. Mind re-testing with the jaunty release and let us know if the issue is still occurring?

Currently running a fresh jaunty install, changed sources.list to karmic, do update & upgrade daily.

It's an IBM ThinkCentre A30 with 2.0 gHz Celeron, 1 g memory, Intel i845 graphics. The machine is perfectly usable except jerky on video particularly YouTube full screen. 2.6.30-1 may be a little better however I don't know of a flash video benchmark?

The linux-image is 2.6.30-1 and "AccelMethod" "uxa" is running, and does make a difference. I run about an hour at a time so I don't know if there are any long term hangups.

How can I tell if this is 2.6.3 or what?

Thanks, Jerry

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel, or look in your Xorg.0.log (search for intel_drv)

The jerky video is probably bug 314928 I guess.

So other than that, are you confirming that the original reported issue is resolved with UXA?

Bryce,
i845 has been running "uxa" a few days now on release level jaunty with linux images rc2, rc3, rc4, currently karmic koala 2.6.30-1.

Perfectly usable as a 2.0 gHz Celeron except for jerky video. I don't have a flash video benchmark. Extremetuxpenguin runs about 3.1 to 4 frames a second as it goes. 3D benchmark glxdragon about 3.8 fps but I don't think that's a good benchmark either.

glxgears a much maligned 3D program displays garbage with "uxa", but doesn't freeze on the i845.

Kudu's to the developers after the intrepid and jaunty vidow bugs which ran for months.

Thanks, Jerry

Option "tiling" "false" fixed the garbage display on glxgears with "uxa" mentioned in my post on 2009-05-20. Currently running "AccelMethod" "uxa" on karmic from sources.list, linux-image 2.6.30-2.
Yes, this is still the intel i845.

Thanks for the "Fix Released".

So I'm marking this as fixed. Please reopen if you can still reproduce this with the new code. Thanks.

While "AccelMethod" "uxa" is working O.K,, do note that Option "Tiling" "false" is needed for example to properly display glxgears.

Glxgears is a much maligned program which does produce fps (frames per second) somewhat erratically, however I don't have any indication it is doing anything unusual so the "gears" should at least display.

Thanks everyone for getting i845 running. This note is from an IBM Thinkpad R31 which uses i830. It's running O.K. however does have font character corruption problems since ubuntu jaunty beta; a problem has been written there. Various characters will add pixels to the point of being unreadable.

Thanks again, Jerry
