There are english and german wikipedia articles about the subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schinderhannes
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_B%C3%BCckler

The english article says "c. 1778" and the more detailed german article says 1779.

Actually quite a few other books (mostly in subject categories) mention the incorrect 1783 date:

http://openlibrary.org/search?q=schinderhannes+1783

And a couple of books give his name as "Johannes Biegler".

What is the best way to deal with this? Just fix all the dates through the wiki? What about reporting the fixes to the upstream data source? We should come up with some way to do that.

Dear Sir or dear Madame,

the life data of Schinderhannes (Johannes Bückler, Pickler, Biegler or similar) are based on the results of the actual scientific project about this person at the University of Mainz (Germany). Since his death in 1803 there was no similar project, that's why the life data in most sources are incorrect. In the last 200 years Schinderhannes has been moved into a legendary person and there were more tales known than facts. Due to the interest in Germany and abroad, all historic documents have now been collected. The actual scientific results are published in
Scheibe, Mark: Schinderhannes. Nichtsnutz, Pferdedieb, Räuberhauptmann ?; 2008, 450pp. (="Schinderhannes. No-good, horse-thief, villain").

I would be happy, if the data could be rectified.

Kind regards,
Mark Scheibe

OK, I just fixed a bunch of these manually. Note you can also fix such errors yourself on any book, by clicking "edit" at the top of the book info page.
