Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

My computer is a Fujitsu/Siemens Laptop Lifebook E series with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400.

I'm using the xserver-xorg-video-ati open source driver.

The native resolution of the screen is 1680x1050 (16:10) and it's working great except when you unplug a beamer.

Steps to reproduce :

1) Have your screen in its native 1680x1050 resolution (16:10)
2) Hotplug a beamer. It will be detected as a screen in gnome-display-properties
3) Most beamer doesn't support such a high resolution (or requires a 4:3 ratio) and will stay black. With gnome-display-properties, lower your resolution (for example at 1024x768)
4) Do your presentation
5) Unplug the beamer. It will disapear from gnome-display-properties
6) Try to reset your resolution : 1680x1050 has disappeared. All other resolution up to 1600x1024 are available. Only this one is not.

Workaround : restarting X (by logging out) is enough. GDM will automatically have the good resolution.

thank you for your bug report, does xrandr on a command line list this one?

Hi ploum,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

sorry for the delay but I don't have access to that hardware very often.

I reproduced the issue and attached all the requested informations. I've also discovered that I've some screen garbage at the bottom of the screen (see the attached screenshot). In general, it looks like moving stuffs make some "garbage" but it's quickly erased by the refresh.

I'm marking gnome-control-center as invalid as it looks more like a xrandr-ati bug than a gnome one.

Would you mind testing if it is still present in the development release? You can download Karmic Alpha-4 here (you can probably just set up wine and install the game in the LiveCD environment to try reproducing):

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

Hi Lionel,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 329071

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 329071 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:
