Hi champamp,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Bryce,

I apologize for not updating this bug sooner: My issue (after much
googlization) was a path statement in the compiz file....it was like pointed
to the wrong path...one too deep I think, and the name wasn't
compiz.real....I made those two changes, and BAM.....unfortunately, after a
recent update, I had to make them again. I don't know why my paths would be
different.

Thanks very much...if you need more detail, please let me know.

Regards,
-Brad

Hello, I've a problem which seems similar. Since a few time (maybe a month and a half, it's the last time I tried compiz) I can't activate desktop effects anymore on my desktop (it seems since Xorg 1.6), whereas they work on Intrepid, worked before and jockey tells me that "nvidia" (nvidia-glx-180) is activated. When I launch compiz in a terminal, I got :

nicolas@black-angel:~$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

Whereas it is marked as enabled in jockey... I've a nvidia 8600 GT, and the lspci command with the some pipe gave me :

nicolas@black-angel:~$ lspci -vv | grep "nvidia"
 Kernel driver in use: nvidia
 Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nvidia

that means that it is in use... and nvidia xserver settings tool is the only one telling me that nvidia driver is not in use... what is the problem ?

Have a nice week end.

I could solve similar problem using nvidia-xconfig, but not using jockey... it should be the default tool to do this though. Attached the output of lspci -vvnn.

[This is an automated message]

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

For details on the changes in this version of -nvidia, please see:

Hello all,

I'm having the same issue. Upgraded to Jaunty from Intrepid right now (9.04 RC) and got this issue.

installed:
nvidia-180-kernel-source 180.44-0ubuntu1
nvidia-180-libvdpau 180.44-0ubuntu1
nvidia-glx-180 180.44-0ubuntu1
nvidia-settings 180.25-0ubuntu1

Solved by:

1) Open gconf-editor in terminal
2) Find the key /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
3) Unmark it

Now, enable the advanced effects. All working.

Very interesting.. I had it unchecked but after starting compiz and on another terminal emerald --replace, it works :-/
But if starting through right click on desktop -> effects, emerald won't start. (now it does not complain about missing drivers :) )

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Thanks for letting us know the issue is resolved with the newer driver; since we have this version in Karmic we can consider the bug solved at this point.

Hey Bryce,

Just wanted to say thanks and confirm that on my Sony Vaio VGN-Z520N with dual Intel/Nvidia Video cards, this has allowed me to activate compiz too!

I had followed the instructions of the Vaio Z Launcpad team, but I couldn't run the Nvidia card, couldn't even have the driver installed, as it would break compiz, even for the Intel card...

Found this thread, installed the .debs, works like a charm, switched to Intel, still working...

Thanks! Ill report this to the others on the Vaio Z team...
