Bug Description

About a week ago my sound stopped working, maybe by a package upgrade or install. Unfortunately I dont know exactly when (and with wich package) it happened.

In System/Properties/Sound all seem to try the pipeline endlessly (until I hit OK).
Videos show, but no sound with none of my players. Playing audio files: just silence.
No system sounds either.

here my system information after I removed pulseaudio (to simplify the stack):
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=f1e5f4d06af05bb9d3b756198acc4b09d671259b

But the problem started with pulseaudio still installed.

Sorry not include the package, as I have no idea which package causes the failure.

I tried sound by booting windows: that is still working which at least excludes a hardware failure.

I've got also some trouble with PulseAudio, but because of cdemu. On last upgrade of cdemu-daemon, I couldn't get any sound from my sound card, and applications such as Rhythmbox or VLC could crash randonly (but without sound anyway).

Actually, it was not related to PulseAudio, but to the configuration file /etc/libao.conf, which was set to "driver=alsa". If an application opens an alsa socket, there is a risk that no other application can play any sound. /etc/libao.conf must contain "driver=pulse" to get applications using libaio working with PulseAudio.

Check your /etc/libao.conf configuration, and check if any of your package could use sound at startup (such as cdemu-daemon). Maybe this can help you.

Hi Jean-Christophe,

Do you think the libao.conf file was changed as part of the cdemu-daemon update?

Sound on my laptop has worked fine with Ubuntu for several months now, but today I rebooted and now it only crackles. My conf file also points to alsa, but I'm loathe to change settings and mask a bug that really needs to be sorted out somewhere else, if those settings previously worked fine.

Bugs #328869, #326864 and #328030 also appear to relate to vanishing sound in the last few days.

Update: I've now fixed this problem on my laptop by re-setting the PCM volume to max - see this existing bug for details: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/272321

If this fixes the problem for you perhaps this bug should be updated to point to the PCM one (272321) so users can report that it has affected them and ensure the correct priority is assigned.

I daringly upgraded to 9.04 beta - and now everything works fine again.
