Bug Description

My monitor sometimes goes black. It is not the screen saver, and the only way to get out of it is to manually shut down by holding the button and then by rebooting manually. I am using Xubuntu and Gnome.
Someone else saif they found a patch that helped but I don't know what it is.
Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu.

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Have you noticed that this screen blanking follows any particular events - leaving the system idle for a period of time, launching any particular problem?

Dropping the assignment to the 'acpi-support' package, which is unrelated (but we don't know yet what package this bug is in).

I am using Xubuntu 8.10. It is does not turn off after a particular event.
It usually happens when I am using it. Someone said that they found a patch
that fixed it, but I don't know what it is so I didn't try it. Do you think
that you can help me find something?
Thank you for your response.
Kedy.

I see that you mentioned that you are also using GNOME, is the problem happening there, too? In your last post you only mentions Xubutnu. Do you have another monitor to try and see if it is a monitor issue? Or another computer you can plug that monitor into?

It gives me the problem on both xfce and GNOME. I can't change my monitor
because it is a laptop.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

Sounds like I had the same problem on my Asus EEETop 1602.

It looks like I could solve the problem by disabling the framebuffercompression in xorg.conf - see bug # 305227 for full details.
