Bug Description

Tried to boot from Live-CD for Jaunty alpha-3 on a Dell Optiplex 960. The screen is black right after selecting try from CD. The keyboard is frozen as well, however, if I press the off button on the machine the Ubuntu splash screen appears, and the status indicator appears. If I keep pressing and releasing the off button, progress proceeds, but still the os never loads.

For me it works. It would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified? Furthermore there could be a problem related to your CD/DVD burner.

Well, I'll verify the cd image. I doubt the problem is with the burner though, it's a brand new system, and the Intrepid release installs and runs just fine. That's what I'm running right now actually: 8.10 on the very same machine, burned with the same burner. I'll try the MD5SUM check. I apologize for the delays in getting back to you, but that machine is sitting in my office and I'm only there on some weekdays.

Thanks again.

So, I tried the same cd on a different (older) optiplex machine, and it boots up fine. So I'm convinced that the issue is an incompatiblity with the Optiplex 960.

Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report. You can do it using Intrepid.

You could possibly get more information if you boot without usplash. Press F6 in boot screen and remove words quiet and splash. There is also option to boot with safe graphics mode via F4.

Following your suggestions, here is where the boot up seems to freeze when I try to boot up. I'm transcribing what I see from the screen. If there's a way to capture this in a log file please let me know.

It freezes here, but if I hit the power switch once, it gives:

At this point I just rebooted.

So it seems the problem is with the USB controller? I've attached the lspci output. I don't know if vvnn was supposed to stand for something, so I just used vvnn literally.

Thanks very much,
-Larry.

A problem occurring so early in boot sounds like a kernel issue, so I am setting the package to 'linux'.

This does appear to be a kernel issue. I was able to force my Optiplex 960 by hitting the power button and hitting the keyboard (no joke). I found this in reference to the kernel, http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12520 If you downgrade to 2.6.27 the bug is not there, but you lose the network driver support.

I had the same problems installing installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a new Dell Optiplex 960 machine.
When i changed the BIOS to the default settings the following three changes occured on my system;

In Drives-> SATA Operation -> RAID On (instead of RAID Autodetect/ATA)
In System-> Integrated NIC-> Enable (instead of Enable with PXE)
In Performance-> C States Control -> Disabled (instead of Enabled)

Don't know which of these settings caused the problem but it seems to be resolved now and the installation was performed without any problem.

I was helping a friend install Ubuntu 9.04 on their 960 over the phone and we ran into the same problem. Trying to help them reset the BIOS to factory defaults over the phone was the tricky part, but once they did it, they were able to boot the installer.
