Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release: 9.04

I wanted to try out Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Alpha.

In doing so, I downloaded the torrent from the Ubuntu.com website.

I went to install via Wubi within Windows XP.

The Wubi installer stated that the version being installed was 8.10 which is clearly not what I wanted to install.

After installation, I ran the command to upgrade to the alpha version of Jaunty Jackalope via Alt + F2 and entering "update-manager -d".

It appeared to be stable albeit with some slightly distored sound.

I tried configuring my Radeon 3650 graphics card for the open source driver which was rejected and the default configuration restored. On reboot of the system I came across the following message:

"Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_binary-i386_Packages (1), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'"

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please attach the file /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_binary-i386_Packages ?

Michael.

File attached as per request in a gz archive.

The error prevents me from updating Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha

Thanks,

the file shows some corruption towards the end, could you please run a memory test and a filesystem test and check if there is a hardware issue?

Michael.

I ran a memtest via the Ubuntu 8.04 CD I have for a short while (i'm afraid
I got rather bored after a while and quit).

Unfortunately I do not know how to undertake a file system test.

I tried switching to the main server (in Software Sources). It would
recognise the updates applicable in my installation (58).

It goes to download them and then the following error occurs (screenshot of
update manager attached).

I'm sorely tempted to delete and reinstall again.

Since this report have a long time without activity, could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.
