No sound after desktop starts, pulseaudio "null output"

I ran an update today, 1/31/09. Now, after the desktop startup sound, no other audio app will produce sound. Sound Preferences > Output has no output sound device. Playback preferences for Pulse Audio indicate "Null Output".
Alsa-utils = 1.0.18-1ubuntu7
Pulseaudio = 0.9.14-0ubuntu2
I've tried this under kernel 2.6.28-6-generic and 2.6.28.5-generic (sound worked on this kernel version prior to update)
