I work with a lot of these. I usually suggest logging out with the external monitor plugged in. Try that to see whether an X reload detects the display.

This keystroke unfortunately does not work even when I start the X session
with the external LCD connected.

Please follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting to determine the scan code of Fn+F3, and do

Output from xev:

keycode 37 = (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), state = 0x0
keycode 12 = (keysym 0x33, 3), state = 0x4
keycode 12 = (keysym 0x33, 3), state = 0x4
keycode 37 = (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), state = 0x4

attaching the hal.txt, too

This keystroke does not work on Jaunty Beta neither. Is there a workaround
that I could use to get the display switching working without the 'display
switching applet'?
