Bug Description
How it actually crashed was that I chose to open a new shell to investigate the new menu.lst to be installed by debconf and nothing happened, the debconf window started to hang there for ever. (The upgrade process renewed the debconf process though after pressing ctrl+c in the upgrade window console)

I just had something similar happen to me. One of the options for dealing with a modified 'menu.lst' file is to be dropped into a shell to examine the situation. I did that, then wasn't sure what I was supposed to do when I was done. So, I typed 'exit' at the shell prompt when I was done making a backup of my menu.lst file, which caused the error.
When you're dropped into a shell like that, it'd be helpful to display some type of help to tell you what it is you're supposed to do when you're done with the shell that is created for you.
