The package brother-lpr-drivers-laser1 appears to replace the older package, but didn't this happen already several releases ago? Anyway, does it help if you install this package (assuming you have this Brother printer in the first place)?

Hi, Thank you and the rest of the guys who develop and maintain this wonderful flavour of Linux. I never thought the response will be this quick for an open source OS organization. Anyway, I tried to clean the lpr install but to no avail. Terminal won't clean, remove, reinstall package for its missing archive files. Same as with Synaptic and Update Manager. I keep getting the message/ bug so I cannot remove or do anything.
I'll try a fresh install of 8.04 or 8.10 for the mean time to test compatibility with my laptop. Thanks again.

In order to help diagnose the precise nature of the problem, do you think you could follow up with the command line you are using and the lines surrounding the actual error message?

Do you have any idea why this package was originally installed, and/or why it needs to be reinstalled?

The command "aptitude why mfc9700lpr" in the terminal might help indicate which dependencies cause this package to be marked to be installed.
