Bug Description

See attached image. This is how it always looks for me at each login, which means I have to invoke "Clean Up By Name" and that gets pretty annoying after a while. Not to mention the bad impression it gives.

"cartman" is a SMB share on another computer, "gamemaker.nu" is a SSH connection, if that could mean anything, since one seems to be sorted alright and not the other.

Titled the bug this way because I sometimes switch Desktops by symlinking ~/Desktop to new places, and each new Desktop is always completely unsorted. This is more of a wishlist type of fix, but if it could be in the same fix everything would be excellent. Something of an auto-clean right after the Desktop has loaded.

Could probably be fixed by Bug #20284, which wants to always keep the Desktop auto-arranged, but it could also be a separate issue so I file this separately.

This is how it looks right after load, and right after Clean Up By Name. As you can see, "cartman" is below "Books" at login.

Thanks for your bug, it's quite similar to #31236. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you have the issue too if you restart nautilus by "gnome-session-remove nautilus; nautilus" by example?

Changed in nautilus:
assignee: nobody → desktop-bugs
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Sorry; I use Dapper kept updated daily. So it's the latest in repos.

Yes, it behaves exactly the same.

I also tested to activate the computer icon as in bug #31236, but I don't seem to have that issue, the icon is correctly placed. See new attachment.

That upload fixes some desktop positioning issues, could you try with it?

 nautilus (2.13.92-0ubuntu1) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
     - Better filename linebreaking at punctuation marks.
     - List view: If a rename moves the file in the view,
       scroll to the new position
     - Better handling of broken filename encoding for link targets
     - Some desktop icon positioning fixes
     - Browser mode: don't close window on up if current directory
       has been removed
     - Pass original files, not target files to property page providers.
       This allows property page extensions to look at desktop files
       and symlinks.
     - Various small optimizations
     - Leak fixes
     - Build fixes
   * debian/control.in:
     - updated the requirement on gnome-vfs2 according to configure

No, sorry, same issue still. I made very sure that I've got that version installed and rebooted - still looks exactly the same.
