Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When I click on any video from youtube website I cannot see them,

I have tried with both Shockwave Flash plugins 8.0r99 (standard with my Ubuntu 8.04 version) and the 10.0r15 (which is the newest available for Ubuntu).

While using the Shockwave Flash plugins 8.0r99, I ve got as a result a white space instead of the wished video (no sound, no image, no video box but just a white space in the web page where the video should be).

While using the Shockwave Flash plugins 10.0r15, I ve got no video box at all appearing on the web page.

Thank you for your feedback.

I have fixed this bug.

here is how:

I have first using Synaptic Package Manager remove all the "flash plugins for mozilla" that were installed in my cases 3 of them (Shockwave Flash plugins 8.0r99 non free, SWFdec Mozilla Free and Mozilla plugin Gnash). In order to do that, just search for flash in Synaptic, you will get a list and select the mozilla flash plugins tht are installed for removal. Then click on apply.

I have then search for the "flash" package again using Synaptic and pickup this flashplugin non free 9.0.152 Adobe Plugin Installer.

I can now see my youtube video without problem.

I have also remarked that while installing automatically the plugin with firefox instead of using Synaptic, the installed plugin goes in the home directory under a hidden .mozilla folder. THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT FOLDER WHERE THE OTHER PLUGIN ARE INSTALLED. That is why they will then not be recognized and used by firefox (this explain my case with the Shockwave Flash plugins 10.0r15 adobe non free that I have installed but was not used => no video box). For the other plugin that came with my firefox version, the non free adobe Flash plugins 8.0r99, it was just an old bad version that needed to be updated.

I don't know if there were some conflict between the plugin but I rather did jut install one of them.

Perhaps making sure that the user is not installing all those plugins should be solved via the package dependency/conflicts. Someone should look into this?

I am marking this bug triaged. No user should be able to install conflicting packages.

I also had this problem with firefox 3.0.6 and Ubuntu Hardy Heron. I fixed it after having removed and reinstalled adobe flash plugin (I had also restarted my firefox after the plugin removal and the plugin installing as bug #174708)

This solved the problem with an Installation of Jaunty NBR on an eeepc 1000h that had been giving me a headache since a week or so. Thanx so much. As remarked above needs to be impossible for user to install this conflicting stuff.

I followed these instructions on a Jaunty upgrade of 8.10, and I still cannot view YouTube videos. There is a brief flicker of the frame as the page is loading and that looks like it /could/ be the video thumbnail YT presents first, but the area then goes blank white and nothing happens.

npwrapper was the culprit:
sudo aptitude purge flashplugin-installer nspluginwrapper
sudo aptitude install flashplugin-installer

restart firefox and now it works.
