Bug Description

Binary package hint: at

i have downloaded and installed java from the sun web site, and when i try to run something that requires java from a web site it tells me
that i don't have java installed or i need the plugin. I have installed the java from the Package Manager, still no success.

I have the same issue in Hardy Heron full update. When I go to a site that requires java (my browser has java enabled in preferences -> content) firefox always says that "additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page". Obviously I install the required plugin (I tested gcj web browser plugin - the plug-in se 6 - gcj web browser plugin using openjdk) but with no success.
I tested this with various java URLs.
(in firefox preferences -> applications -> content type I see no java content)

The problem seems resolved with firefox restart. I think this is an usability bug as firefox should invite the user to restart the browser after installing the plugin.

The same behavior confirmed in Intrepid (amd64): also in this distro firefox doesn't ask for browser restart.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest firefox version? Thanks in advance.

Martin, have we to test this issue with the latest firefox version either in Hardy or in Intrepid (or in Jaunty)?

marco, the firefox versions in Hardy and Intrepid are the same and I think Jaunty also shipps the same one, so it shouldn't matter whether to test it with Hardy, Intrepid or even Jaunty. Thanks.

Martin, I can confirm the issue with the latest firefox version (3.0.5) in Hardy x86_64.

Confirmed also with firefox version 3.0.6 in Hardy.
The same issue happens also if you remove the plugin (you have to restart firefox else you can always see it in the firefox plugin window)

This bug has not been updated for over a year and a half. Can you test this problem in Maverick? If it has already been fixed please let us know.

I didn't find any problem at Maverick.
The ubuntu-restricted-addons package (suggested at the beginning of installation) installs/recommends the icedtea plugin. It's a fork of Open JDK.

Sun JDK/JRE is now in the partner repository. I'll test it soon!
