usb hard drive - unable to use

Bug Description
If my USB hard drive is plugged in when I boot Ubuntu 8.10 then the system refuses to start until the drive is disconnected. When plugged in after boot then the device is still not usable, a very large number of messages are found in the syslog. The device works as expected in Debian unstable/
I have attached the errors, note I truncated the output, the following two lines continuously repeat:

An that bug, you'll find references to a potential fix in Bug 221983. I hope that these can help.
