system hung when synchronising foxmarks and trying applications browser

Bug Description

Using Firefox browser and synchronising Foxmarks. Tried to select an Application from ubuntu's pull down list and system froze. Had to switch machine off and reboot.

Just started using ubuntu and it has so far downloaded 208 updates since installing. I have downloaded a few applications in addition to the standard issue, but was not actually used any of them. In fact, I only had Firefox open.

But Firefox might be a red herring, knowing that OS bugs are not always what they appear to be.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-terminal
Package: gnome-terminal 2.24.1.1-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: gnome-terminal
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-9-generic i686

Is this freeze reproducable, or did it happen once?

With further usage, I think Ubuntu freezes after the screen saver kicks in.
That is, when the system is idle for some time. Can't tell what caused it,
but it does happen regularly. It has happened when I was copying from a disc
connected by USB. But sometimes when I am not doing anything.

Can you please attach /var/log/syslog to this report?

Do you have another computer to check if networking is still up when the system freezes?

The local network is up all the time.
I attach all the syslogs. They most terminate by me pressing the power off
hard swich because the system has frozen.

As you will see, I haven't used it much - mainly because I can't rely on it.

The syslogs don't give much of a clue to what is happening.

What is needed is to figure out what package to assign this too so then more expert people can help.

I'm not sure if it is the linux kernel or xorg.

This may or may not help, but if you can ssh into the machine after the freeze and then type 'dmesg' to get the kernel messages and attach the last 20 or so lines, then that may have a message about what when wrong. Often the logs are not cleared to the disk when the system is hard reset.

Also, what might be good is the /var/log/Xorg* log files.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

If you're still having the issue, please let us know whether you can ssh into the machine after the freeze. Thanks.

There is another bug/issue that I would like to report:

When I downloaded 9.10 from your French mirror and tried to install on a
different PC, it hangs if I choose to "Try..." or "Install...". It allows
me to reboot from the C drive, and use the various function keys for the
options, but no installation occurs.

I tried this on two PCs with the same result.

I used 8.10 and it works fine at this point.

I used to have what appeared like a freeze on a 1GB RAM netbook without a SWAP partition. The problem was not a lock up, but a freeze that only lasted while foxmarks (now xmarks) was syncing.

One solution was to set xmarks to only sync manually. The other solution was to set up a swap partition on an SD card (The netbook in question only uses SSD drives. I did not want all of the gratuitous writes to SWAP shortening the life of the SSD. The SD card is cheap to replace when it starts to fail from overuse.)

Thanks for the update, Rodger. Glad it's fixed for you. I am closing this report since it is no long reproducible.

Please file a new report for your other issue. The package is "ubiquity". Thanks for your help!
