Is the dvd player new?
Tom (tom6) wrote : | #4 |
Questions:
1. Is it the dvd-disc that works in another machine or the dvd-player?
2. Can you try another dvd-disc in the Linux machine's dvd-player?
3. Can you swap the players between the Windows machine and the Linux one?
Don't worry if you can't. It can be dangerous to mess around with hardware if you're not sure. Sometimes a player takes a dislike to a particular disc for no readily apparent reason while being quite happy with everything else. If you need to transfer the data over can you network the machines with a crossed cable or via a router or can you email from the Windows machine and receive it on the Linux one? ie - is your immediate goal a data-transfer issue or getting the whole system perfect?

Have you tried from the 'Places' menu up at the top (usually) aswell as other routes?

No, I can't.
$ cd /media/cdrom0
bash: cd: /media/cdrom0: Permission denied
However, I can hear music in a CD inserted in the same drive. Too, I can
hear music of a movie, but Totem cannot display it (this is another
problem.)

Yes, the DVD is a new drive.
Really, the problem is the same in different machines, one old with a
Pentium III and another with a Athlon X2 64bit.

1. The DVD disc was inserted in two different DVD drives. One in a old
machine (Pentoium III) and another in a new machine (Athlon X2 64bit).
2. Yes, I can see other DVDs. I know the DVD player is good. The point is
that this particular DVD with so many pdfs in the root of the DVD can be
read it by WinXP, but not by Linux and to me that is a bug in Linux.
3. I suppose I can move the data to another media, like a USB drive but I
don't see the point to do that because I can see the contents in Windows.
Really I'm only reporting a bug in Linux.

Weird that you can hear music without an application opening up. Thanks for answering my questions. Good luck hunting this one down

Still no help on this?
jfrr (jfranrivera) wrote : | #12 |
NO, therefore I uninstalled Linux. I tried with PC-BSD but the
problem is the same, the system gives "access denied" to the contents
of DVD.
I believe the cause of this problem is that the DVD contains so many
documents on the root and the file systems used both GNU/Linux and
FreeBSD cannot process this situation.
Best regards.

Hello,
I will like extend the information about this problem. I reinstall Linux
Ubuntu 8.10 but now using the 32 bits version. The problem with de DVD
persist.
After that I install the last version of Virtual Box, 2.1.2 and install
OpenSolaris 2008.11 as a guest. And voila... OpenSolaris can show the
contents of the DVD, but Linux continue without show the files (a folder in
this case with the files)!!
Really, I suppose that OpenSolaris have a more advanced DVD device driver
that Linux Ubuntu 8.10
I attach to screen captures to show this situation.
Best regards.

neither the screenshots or the description are clear about the issue
jfrr (jfranrivera) wrote : | #15 |
Thanks for your answer,
The screen captures are clear. They shows my computer (with Linux Ubuntu
8.10).
In "Linux-
os64-01 (where OpenSolaris is running in a virtual machine created with
VirtualBox) and the background window with Linux System Monitor. In the
cdrom0 window you can see the error, because Linux Nautilus cannot display
the DVD contents. But in the os64-01 window you can see OpenSolaris Nautilus
showing the DVD contents, you can see the folder named "Libros".
In "Linux-
try to show the DVD contents: "bash : cd: /media/cdrom0: Permission denied"
In "Linux-
in OpenSolaris Nautilus.
Is clear now?
Best regards.
