gThumb works with pcx files I found on the internet for me. What doesn't work is Eye of Gnome Image Viewer.

Are you sure it doesn't work for gThumb? Also, a sample image might be helpful.

Hi Brian,
It definitely doesn't work for me, and I am still learning the ins and
outs of linux so figuring some of these things out is a bit difficult. I
was able to read these files in GIMP with no problems, but did not try
this until I had installed a library that specifically supports pcx
format files. I have attached a sample file. Perhaps there is something
I have done wrong, but the odd thing is that gthumb recognizes it as a
legitimate graphics file and provides pixel counts, but displays a blank
box in place of the graphic.

What program created the PCX file you have attached?

I was able to open the file w/ GIMP and then resaved it as a PCX file and now everything else can read it. That seems odd, not entirely sure what's causing the issue yet. Random PCX files on the internet gThumb & others seem to be able to open fine.

Hi Bryan,
The files are converted from an early version of hppcl to pcx by a batch
conversion program that runs in dos, it's ancient and I no longer
remember where the two .exe files came from to do this, (possibly Orcad)
I wrote a batch file to string them together back then.. (I've been
using them for nearly 20yrs) The files are output from Orcad3 schematic
capture. These files have always opened in every windows based viewer I
have ever used and actually open fine in Gimp as well. I had not even
considered the possibility that these files had some attribute that made
them non compliant with the pcx file format. I could look for a recent
windows based file converter and see if that produces files that are
readable. In the meantime I will resave a couple of these files in gimp
and see if gthumb can then read them. One other possibility is that they
are normally stored on a dos partition (fat32), but this hasn't caused a
problem with jpgs or anything else that I am aware of.

I would be happy to send you the batch file and exe configured to run in
dosbox if you are interested, but I wonder if that would be useful at all.

Regards, Kevin
