Bug Description

Several times after upgrading to Intrepid my computer will freeze with the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking.

I have a Intrepid on a Thinkpad T22, no compiz, atheros wifi. I have not found any messages in the logs that could explain this problem, but I am attaching the last ten minutes from all the logs anyway.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have the same problem on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 ( Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron]).

The use of the wireless connection causes random freeze with CAPS LOCK blinking.

Very annoying problem...

both report the same type of bug problem I think

in theory a wireless attack could cause your computer to freaze with this type of bug if its not fixed, just a guess anyway

After a few weeks using the ethernet connection instead of the wireless. Yesterday, I tried again and my laptop is running for more than 24h without any freeze. Maybe the problem has been resolved by a kernel update ?

After a few days using my wireless connexion without any problems (see my previous comment), my laptop freezed again this week-end, just before I upgrade my kernel with ubuntu updates.

robsstartrek - I appreciated your enthusiasm, but please don't mark bugs as duplicates of each other unless you are absolutely 100% sure they are the same problem. "Freeze and Caps lock blinking" is a very generic symptom which could have one of many possible causes. Just because people see the same symptom doesn't mean that they are necessarily experiencing the same bug. Marking bugs as duplicates when each bug might describe a separate issue will mean that some problems disappear off the radar and will take longer to fix.

I`ve reported that bug too. It happened in 6.06 LTS for the first time and it happens in 8.04 LTS too. I think I know where the problem is - this is some hardware overload. I stressed my CPU using many apps opened. Firefox3 (playing flash youtube etc), Thunderbird, Wine with 3D gaming. After some time the freeze occured. After that I tried it again and it happened too. Now I am more than sure it is due to the overload :) It`s not sec. vulnerability, you just lose what you started any unsaved information is vast too.

Just my guess... anyone who encountered that is using Intel processors? Taking a note is that if you are using C2D this may something to do with intel HYPERTHREADING whic is unsupported in C2Duo. Please, report what type of CPU you are all using? I`ve encountered that in my old - E4400@2.0GHz, now on my E8400@4GHz. Never seen that on my old Duron@999MHz

this bug is still affecting me using Karmic 64bit on a Lenovo W500. the problems are exactly as described here: randow crashes (caps lock blinking) when using wifi. no crashes so far (2 days) when using wired internet.

(the problem seems to get worse when using the ati display driver in Karmic, but there is no hard proof for this, just the fact that it crashed about once every half an hour when using ati and about once every day when using intel)

Hi nandhp,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 309003

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
