Hi Makh!

Just yesterday I solved the problem after 3 or 4 days trying several
things. What I did was deactivate the driver (go to
systems->administration->hardware drivers). After the driver is
deactivated, go to the terminal and get into /etc/X11 and make a backup copy
of the xorg.conf file; say xorg.conf.back, and delete the original file.
Then type: sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-177. After the install, do: sudo
nvidia-xconfig and reboot. Once you are logged in, activate the driver
again and that ought to do it. It did it for me. If you fail to login
reboot on recovery mode, get a terminal line and get rid of the new
xorg.conf file and reinstall the back up one giving it the original name.

Cheers

I think I'm way to "challenged" (new to Ubuntu) to follow the instructions above. Is there a update fix planned for this issue in the near future? I'm running Firefox 3.0.8, and Ubuntu 8.10.

Hi Wilson!

Yes! There is a new version of Ubuntu coming out every six moths. The next
one is due, I believe, on the 23th of this month; it's called JAUNTY
JACKALOPE. I suppous that this next version will have fixed that problem.
If you google the web for that name, you'll be able to download the ISO
image of the system after that date. Enjoy it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

The problem seemed linked to the Nvidia proprietary driver: if I disabled it, things were OK. Anyway, the problem disapeared with 9.04. I have since biuilt a new computer with an HD ATI4850 card and have had no problems whatsoever.
Thanks for your help.
