Bug Description

It would be ok that Evo is in two places, problem is that each of them use different label for menu and different icon. My pick is that old Office menu should be updated for new icon and label. Otherwise it is really confusing.

Thanks for your bug. What is the issue? It has 2 differents icons because those are 2 different functions, one is for the office suite and one is for the mailer

In short, I found it a little bit confusing. I feels like a bug for expierenced Linux user :) But if it is specially made like that, maybe it serves it's purpose. it just icons looks very different - it could be nice to have some similarity because then user would get idea that it is from same direction. Also Evolution old icon feels somehow dated.

Is there any use for the user to know that's the same application? We use 2 differents menu items because those are two different functions, they could as well be different binaries and not the same sofware

Not really related to this bug, but when looking in Alacarte, there are 2 Evolution menuitems in the Office menu. The first one is unchecked (invisible) the second one is checked (visible), they seem to be the same.

Response to Sebastien: I think there is need for that; there are many cases, when people would like to have (or they would like to _know_ that it is the same app) integration between Office like Evolution (tasks/calendar) and Email client like Evolution (pop/stmp/imap access, filters, search, etc). So it would be very good to have same app and icon here or at least have visually similar icons for it. Because if it looks confusing as costant user of Evolution and GNOME desktop, I think it is total showstopper for casual/simple user to understand meaning Evolution as 'groupware' here.

Of course, it _is_ my thougts. If it is really hard to deal with, it could stay that way. But it is confusing, period.

I agree with this. I for one like to launch calendar (office application) only when I need it rather than launching the email client (web application) and then switch to calendar (it's slow :) ).

This problem is back with a herd 4 plus a dist upgrade done today.

I agree the differences in icons and labels is very confusing and does need correcting.

I do not remember seeing this after the herd 4 install.

One is "Evolution Mail", which specifically opens the mailer, and it is under Internet. Fine by me.

What's the problem, here?

make the logo the same in both menu entries and label the mailer -under "Internet"- as "Evolution Mail" and the calendar -under Office- as "Evolution Calendar". that, afaik, would solve the confusion.

I would second last comment about the same logo in both entries, but with different labels, like "Evolution Mail" and "Evolution Calendar", this could be a nice solution.

Wow. I've just seen the new Evo icons on the Tango Fridays page:

See "December 15th".

THIS is what we want!

I am copying here some reasons why to remove one of these menu items...
from one of duplicates of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/123731

The reasons are:
 * when user uses Evolution Mail for most time (and most desktop users will do so), the last used component of Evolution (launched by Office->Evolution) would be Mail anyway
 * it confuses users... the most of users recognize Evolution as Mail client with additions (not a set of equal components or groupware application)... users simply want to "run a mail client"
 * "Evolution" and "Evolution Mail" looks like synonyms to user... most of users use short names of applications... they say "GIMP", not "GIMP Image Editor", etc...
so "Evolution" means "Evolution Mail" for most...
 * switching to another component is very easy inside Evolution itself, there is no need to have 2 items in menu... The situation here is equivalent to e.g. if Brasero
burning application have one launcher in "Sound and Video" menu to run cd-audio-burning-component and another in "Accessories" menu to run its data-cd-burning-component
 * When users found that Evolution has two menu items that seems to behave the same way, they may ask stupid questions in Launchpad... like me ;-)

Note: This all is only my opinion, and I understand some users like to have both items in menu.. but I have talked to several non-experienced users and they all are confused by having two Evolution menu items and they have no symphathy for this duplication..

maybe I am missing something here... at least on Feisty/Gutsy, firing either "Internet/Evolution Mail" or[ "Internet/Evolution (Groupware Suite)" on Feisty/KDE or "Evolution" on Gutsy/Gnome] bring up the *same* Evolution, with Calendar, Contacts, etc as buttons, and Mail opened. One opens Evolution with --component=mail, the other without options -- by default, Mail.

So -- again, at least on Feisty/Gutsy -- there is *NO* difference which one we choose to start Evolution off. (this is on a machine running Feisty/KDE, and on a machine running Gutsy/Gnome).

Ergo: they should be *either* (1) named identically *or* (2) one should vanish. I personally do not think it bad to have two entries, but then they indeed should be named the same.

The basic rule here would consistency.

Note that while Evolution has Contacts/Tasks/Calendars/Memos, it seems like users have to configure email in it to use it even if they initially launch it from Office/Evolution, so it's probably sane to hide the Office menu because it's always an email client no matter what, and users will see the other features after they configure email in it (Maybe the description could be updated, 'evolution email and personal information manager'? That's a horrible string but I don't know how to phrase it.)

In addition, the Office/Evolution item's tooltip is not phrased as an imperative verb, as per the GNOME HIG and every other app in the default menus.

This is my first debdiff, but this removes the Evolution entry from Internet (as well as the duplicate entry in alacarte mentioned above). The reason I removed that was because it was added in debian/ so this is closer to upstream. If this approach isn't the best, perhaps we could still eliminate the extra .desktop files, but just change the category of the upstream version from Office(?) to Network.

Sorry for spam: the description should have read "debdiff to eliminate the Evolution desktop entry under Internet" (instead of Office).
