Error code 503 when chatting over xmpp. Remote user gets errors saying I am offline.

Binary package hint: pidgin
I am trying to chat with a friend over xmpp. We're using google talk accounts, he uses gtalk under Vista, I am using pidgin under ubuntu 8.10. For every message I am trying to send I am getting error code 503 - message cannot be delivered. At the same time he is getting "aa.ivanov ... is offline and can't receive messages right now."

This is a networking issue, so you should check all network related settings (firewalls, router ports etc.). Check the network settings in pidgin, Tools > Preferences > Network.
Please run pidgin --debug in a terminal and reproduce, the output should give you some clues to what is causing this. You can attach the output to this bug if you like, so we can have a look.
