Bug Description

Hi all,

This bug only affects the AMD64 bits distro. On the 32 bits distro of Ubuntu 8.10, ALSA run OK and recognize the onboard Card.

Since i have installed Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 version on my PC, I haven't got no sound at all.
The PC is an AMD Phenom 9950, 4Gb of RAM (800Mhz), Motherboard Asus M3N78-VM (audio and video onboard).

I have made a report in the question #52946, but I did not be able to solve the problem. In this question I've found the follow kernel patch, although I don't know how to apply it: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=f7278fd0a57ea6cde4988ab820851b01be20daef

The alsa-info.sh report is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=143b043522a9f2ceec82fe7cf930524b32fd23f3 (It has no useful information since the card is not recognized.)

SOLVED with ALSA-DRIVER 1.0.18a

That patch is already in the 2.6.27-10 kernel which is in the Proposed repository. You can enabled it in System -> Administration -> Software Sources. See if installing that kernel and rebooting fixes it. If not, I think the card is totally unknown to Linux at the moment and needs to be defined.

Also, according to http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2008-October/011332.html and http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2008-October/011455.html, the audio controller is supported in 2.6.27 (Intrepid) but there's a bug in the HDMI, which is fixed in Takashi's tree and I think should be in 2.6.28 (Jaunty).

I don't really know what HDMI is though. So I don't know if that means it should be working for analogue out but not digital out, or if that explains the no-sound-at-all thing.

Have you buy any chance disabled any modules/drivers? I notice that no sound drivers are loaded according to your alsa-info.sh output.

Does it help to set PCM in "alsamixer -Dhw" to 80 and unmute the channel if necessary with the key M?

If there is no driver loaded, it has nothing to do with the mixer. I
don't know if alsamixer will even run in that case.

The thing to try first would be to manually run "sudo modprobe
snd-hda-intel" and see if it'll even let the driver load at all.

(before anything, sorry for my english)

I have updated the kernel with the 2.6.27-10 in the proposed repository and
still haven't got sound. Perhaps, I was made a mistake in the Bios setup
,although in windows, the sound runs ok.

If I'll must manually load some drivers or run some specific test, please,
give me detailed information on how to do it, because I haven't got much
experience in linux...

Thanks again..

Reading the alsa-info posted by him, I have noted that (in Kernel

the Architecture is x86_64 (I have installed Ubuntu for AMD64).
Then, in the case of Hanno, alsa-info says that Ubuntu has loaded the module
snd_hda_intel, but in my case, Ubuntu doesn't load it.

May be the distribution for AMD64 has got the problem?

No, I read the alsa-info output for both of you. You have different
models of sound cards, although they're the same model of motherboards.

Ah! That's a useful error message. Could you attach that file (/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base) to the bug? You didn't edit that file at any point, did you?

That line totally broke the driver's ability to load. It was trying to tell the hardware to behave in ways it simply can't.

After modprobing it, can you run the alsa-info script again?

And for the sake of "fun" instead of only testing gstreamer stuff, let's try something else.
If you run "alsamixer -c0" can you change volume? The computer translation of your question seems to say you were trying to change the volume using GNOME's thing. If you can, raise the volume all the way (use M to toggle mute status), then run "aplay /usr/share/sounds/login.wav" and let me know if you hear that sound.

And in other way,.. what's about "
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=45&CatID=3140&SubCatID=154"?,
is possible that I can compile this driver for Ubuntu 8.10?

That's extremely outdated. I don't think it'd work with the current kernel. It also only lists VT1708, not VT1708B. Can you please post the alsa-info from after modprobing? I want to compare it with SUSE's and see what's changed between them.

Sorry, my english may be too basic..

after, before... I'm a bit queasy, and I no understanded you.

Could you tell me exactly what to do? I mean, do you prefer that I re-edit
the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base adding again the line "options snd-hda-intel
probe_mask=1" at the end, reboot, then run the command "modprobe
snd-hda-intel", and then run the application utils_alsa-info.sh?

thanks for your patience...

Sorry, let's go with this:

Do not edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base again. You want that problem line
to not be in it.

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

Then run the alsa-info.sh script.

You don't need to paste the output here. It actually makes it a little
more difficult to read. Just give the link.

may I change the description of the bug?, seeing the last post, I can confirm that the bug only affects the 64bits distribution of Ubuntu 8.10.

Yeah, changing the description when new information arises is
encouraged. It helps get the needed info to the top instead of having
to read through the whole thing later.

Please _attach_ your dmesg from: 1) booting into openSUSE; 2) booting into a _jaunty_ daily-live. Do not test 8.04.1 or 8.10.

I haven't got a cd of jaunty, but I can download it (only that tomorrow I could run that test).

(booting with suse)
Here I do attach a copy of dmesg and alsa-info.sh booting with suse, but before anything, I must tell you that I have a great new..!

(something else)
Trying to do anything with this problem, I was updated the alsa-driver to the 1.0.18a version, following the steps published on http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel and only I had some problems configuring the alsa-utils..
and when I rebooted, MIRACLE... the sounds WORKS!!!...

Do you need that I post some alsa-info booting with ubuntu 8.10 64bits or the dmesg?

think 1.0.18 is in Jaunty, but just to be sure it works in Jaunty,

If it's not fixed in Jaunty, then yes, post the dmesg. If it is fixed,

Pedro:
Why did you mark it solved? You said you still didn't hear any sound.

Ignacio:
alsa-info.sh doesn't have a space in it, is the name of a file that
needs to be downloaded first, and must be executable in order to be run.

Hi Morgan,
I solved the problem (no sound) installing the ALSA-DRIVER 1.0.18a from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download

Thenk you for your help but I could solve it reading on the web.
I noticed that some m3n78-vm, which in asus page is suposed to have the VIA VT1708B souncard, had the realtec ALC 1200, so I look for a problem with that and found tha y could download a newer alsa from : http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/ which solved my problem up to now. In a near future, if it doesn`t work I`ll contact you.

Thank you a lot for answering my questions

Please test again with a Jaunty daily live cd. The version of ALSA
currently in Jaunty is 1.0.18rc3, so it *should* (assuming no further
breakage) resolve this problem in Jaunty.

I was experiencing the same problem (no sound with VT1708B) and installed Jaunty and still didn't have sound. I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with video and audio on-board, a AMD Athalon 5050e, 8GB RAM.
I installed Jaunty as an update to Ubuntu 8.10 (I don't know if that matters).

And just to pass on my video driver no longer worked in Jaunty. I selected the Nvidia 177 packages with the package manager and it came back that I needed the nvidia-177-kernel ... source package which I couldn't get through the manager. Now the system is hung. I will probably just reinstall a different OS because I would like to use 64 bit because I do have 8GB of RAM.

Just an update. I continued working with Jaunty. I could not get the sound to work so I ended up installing a newer alsa and now the sound works fine. This no sound problem is not resolved with Jaunty.
