p54pci module freezes the system when loaded with a Netgear WG511 pcmcia wifi card (v1)

Bug Description

The system is an Acer TravelMate 212TVX laptop. The operating system version is Ubuntu 8.10 (first freshly installed,
with the original 2.6.27-7 kernel, and later auto-updated through wired network, with kernel 2.6.27-9).

If the Netgear WG511 (v1) wifi PCMCIA card is already inserted at bootup the system freezes completely around 16%
of bootup process (right after starting the sound card driver, as a small click can be heard through the speakers when
the sound card is started). While the system is completely locked (no keyboard, no console switching, nothing)
just by removing the wifi card the system responds at once and resumes the bootup process with no more
problems.

If the module is blacklisted (in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) to avoid the startup lockup, and later mounted from Terminal
with "sudo modprobe p54pci" the system freezes as well most times, but not always. When there is no lockup, usually
the card doesn't work at all, but I've seen it working 2 times (out of 20 or so). If the system freezes, removing the card
unlocks the system and everything is fine.

Tested the computer with a PCMCIA ethernet card and everything works fine, the system boots quick and smooth and
network connectivity under ubuntu GUI is perfect, so it seems that the PCMCIA port is not the source of the problem.

As usual, the wifi card works well under windows xp. Under prims54 the card works too, and doesn't freeze at all, but
this old module has a lot of problems with WPA, and WEP is not an option right now. I've seen in the module blacklist
file that prism54 has been deprecated by default in ubuntu 8.10 (because of the WPA problems, I suppose).

Tried to start the systema with acpi=off, noapic, nolapic and all that, just in case, but nothing changed. Updating the
kernel chaged nothing as well.

Best regards.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after inserting and then removing the wifi card and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" with the wifi card inserted and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

The uname result is:

Linux ubuntu 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I attach the logs you requested. The lspci log is made after successfully booting the system with the pcmcia card
inserted (had to boot several times to get there). Once in the gnome desktop I removed the card, reinserted it (which
caused the usual freeze of the system) and removed it again to unfreeze the system, so at the end of the log you
can see exactly what happens during the insert->freeze->remove->unfreeze sequence.

Best regards

After upgrade to 10.4, kernel 2.6.32-21, my wl-140 wifi card now uses the p54pci module while in earlier kernels the ath5k module was used.
The problem is that sometimes the systems freezes and only a hard reset will reboot it.
When I try to send a large file through scp the activity led on the card stays on and the system freezes.
I can't find any usefull log entries.
I have tested it a few times and it only occurs on larger files, not with smaller files < 1MB.
Sometimes a few KB is received on the other system and sometimes 1.5 MB before the frees.

uname -a
Linux mobi 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I've attached the info mentioned in a previous post.

Just tested it with my 'old' kernel 2.6.31-21 with the p54pci module and that worked perfectly with various large files.
So it's save to say the problem lies in 2.6.32-21.

Hi sobakus,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 305754

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Well this bug is still present and bugging me like hell. It is my only WLAN card with good reception.
It is not as severe as with the others that posted before me. I can use my WLAN for normal surfing but as said before, if there is something larger (like a big image) everything just freezes. Actually it is easy to reproduce just by starting to download a (big) torrent file.
I hope this can be resolved somehow.

Same problem with a Sitecom WL-140 cardbus adapter on IBM Thinkpad R51 with internal wifi switched off. I tested the adapter with several kernels. It works well with kernels 2.6.31-21 and 2.6.31-22. Starting with kernel 2.6.32-21 through the recently distributed kernel 2.6.32-24 the WL-140 adapter freezes the system after some network traffic. I generated heavy network activity with the iperf utility and can reproduce this bug any time. If any extra info is needed, please let me know.
