No sound since upgrade to 8.10

Since i upgraded from ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 i lost all kind of sound. Just sometimes some strande noise.

There were a few bugs the past days about missing sound. Just by chance:
Can you enable sound again by setting PCM in "alsamixer -Dhw" to 100 or so? And are you sure every channel is unmuted? (MM) under a channel means that it is muted, you unmute with the key M . Also you try a "alsactl restore".

I just tested to change in sound preferences tab devices from auto detect
where I heard just those strange noises to OSS-Open Sound System and worked
fine.It does not work with ALSA and PulseAudio. With those i only hear a
sound that looks like static electricity. However in firefox i continue just
only hearing this static noise. In rythmbox all works ok.

Ah okay. And did you already try what I suggested in my last post? The
alsamixer -Dhw
?

Yes I did but no MM present. it still makes some static sound in firefox.

Sorry my mistake
Yes i eanabled sound im Alsamixer but i did not notice that the gaain was
00.
Yesterday i increased gain in PCM and... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL sound.
Sorry again, my mistake and thanks for yor help.

Glad to hear it's working again. And thanks for the answer, many people don't answer if their problem was fixed.
The bug is already known as bug 288039 and so I mark this one as a duplicate of that one. Thanks!
