Bug Description

Version:
Ubuntu 8.10, new installation from live-cd. AMD64. 6gb ram. Built in graphics from motherboard p5q-em. Intels g45 chipset.

Description:
When I choose 1680x1050 I the screen turns black for a second and then back to normal again. This occurs and random time intervals over and over again. Some times it can pass a few minutes before it happens again. Very annoying. I seem to be able to provoke the black screen to appear by quickly moving the windows from side to side, works every time with firefox. I have tried to turn off effects of compiz, tried them at normal and extra but the result is the same.

Drivers:
The videodriver is the latest one for intel from the repository. I have also tried the latest driver 2.5.1. Same thing happens. But this installation is a 2d-only so compiz didn't want to run.

NOTE: Everything works fine at 1440x900 resolution!

Thank you for reporting this bug. Could you please also attach the following?
- /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if this is changed from the minimum default)
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- output of `lspci -vvnn`

Also, can you see if anything is added to /var/log/Xorg.0.log at the time it blinks? (e.g. by running `wc -l /var/log/Xorg.0.log && sleep 1` in a loop).

Noting gets added to /var/log/Xorg.0.log while the screen turns black. I checked the file with `tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log` and nothing showed up there.

My monitor is a Samsung 205BW. I tried this http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-648349.html (with some modifications due to the intel 2.5.1 driver i compiled) without any luck the other day.

I have also tried changing the compiz settings so that it doesnt detect the refresh rate or anything else for that matter.

You're probably right about nothing being added to Xorg.0.log, but `tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log` has fooled me before. You have the same EDID information several times at the end of your Xorg.0.log, and if that gets added every time it flashes you may not see it since the last lines of the file will still be the same. Sometimes monitors flash when they are probed for EDID information. See bug 278471 and duplicates for examples.

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:
