Bug Description

Since upgrading to Intrepid, my Lenovo X61 laptop hangs quite often. I suspect that its the X server that's hanging rather than the kernel, because the kerneloops package is not asking me to submit a report, but please feel free to reassign this bug.

Strangely, the caps-lock LED flashes when the computer has hanged, as does the wireless LED.

This blog posts suggests that it might be related to the use of a Wireless-N router instead of a Wireless-G router:
http://junsamboy.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
I did in fact change the router to a Wireless-N router at the same time as upgrading to Intrepid.

Hi murrayc,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Changed in xorg:
status: New → Incomplete

This is definitely a problem with Intrepid - most likely the new kernel. Using the 8.10 64 bit, my Lenovo X61s works for a bit and then randomly locks up, requiring a hard restart.

It seems to be related to the Intel GM965 Wireless chipset.

I've gone back to 8.04 - I need to use my Lenovo in production for a bit. Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks

I haven't yet had a chance to get those log details immediately after the crash. Nor have I had a chance to see if I can ssh into the box after it has happened. But it feels like a kernel crash. I just guessed that maybe it's an X crash because installing kerneloops didn't seem to do anything, but I've never used that before so maybe I'm expecting too much from it.

Looks like the wireless driver is causing the trouble. I've had this too, but not anymore with jaunty.

Interesting that this is fixed in the jaunty development code and not patched yet.

Interesting that it's fixed in the new code.

Are you having any trouble with jaunty? I use mine for production, and
am a little uncomfortable with installing an alpha. But need the
wireless connectivity.

Thanks

I'm also having the same issue with Intrepid 64 on a Lenovo T61p. The screen goes black, the capslock light starts flashing, and the machine does not respond to any keypresses, and requires a hard reset.

Hello,

Have you tried installing the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic package? As documented at <http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810#System lock-ups with Intel 4965 wireless>, there are known issues with 802.11n support in the intrepid version of the driver which could not be resolved without introducing regressions, so this fix is only available in the lbm package.

I don't know if this helps or hinders but I have a similar behaviour on my Acer Aspire One 150 running Easy Peasy 1.0 (Ubuntu 8.10 Netbook Remix).

kj@carrot:~$ uname -a
Linux carrot 2.6.27-8-eeepc #1 SMP Sun Nov 16 12:02:12 MST 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

It seems to happen if I have several Firefox tabs displaying video at the same time. I don't think I have seen it happen otherwise.

Any news on a fix for this?

This is a complete show-stopper for me, in 8.04 and Jaunty. Can't have a production box seizing up randomly.

Second question, Launchpad related - Why is this still Incomplete/Undecided? How do we bring this to the attention of the gurus?

I'd love to help however I can - just no other ideas what to do.

Thanks.

This bug persists on the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 even with the 64-bit linux-backports-modules-jaunty package.

However, I've got two T61 computers, and the hang only happens for me on the computer with the offboard Nvidia 140M video card. The hang seems much more frequent with the closed Nvidia drivers, but system or video load doesn't affect hang frequency.

My T61 would sometimes stay on the network after the video hang, so I thought that the video card was going bad. Lenovo replaced the Nvidia NVS 140M as a warranty repair, but the hang still happens.

On perhaps 10% of the hangs, the T61 reboots into the system interrupt menu. (ie: The hang is sometimes coincident with an SMI event.)

- running latest karmic kernel ( 2.6.31-18-generic ), but upgraded several times ( i think from 6.10 )

Same issue here with 2.6.31-21-generic on a T61 on unstable karmic. Found out that the wireless drivers causes kernel panics when left for a while under load.

sudo modprobe -r iwl3945

And plugging in the ethernet when leaving it alone seems to help.

Also, try an older kernel and see if that helps.
