Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Solitaire game will not permit legal moves but "hints" suggest a move, then next step reverses it, and cycles repeatedly.

Meanwhile the game will not permit playing four stacked cards to be moved to an appropriate place. Sometimes "hints" states the game is unsolvable. Yet other moves are possible but not permitted.

Source package Ubuntu Ver 8.04 Games under applications. Game is Aisle riot.

Hello:
Please excuse me for lacking the knowledge to properly report and
document bugs. I'm new to Ubuntu. Only installed it two weeks ago.

Yes the bug is reproducible within the game. By using the UNDO butom
we can scroll back half a dozen moves but if we then repeat the same
moves the same thing happens. I'm trying to get the wife familiar with
using a LINUX machine and she is an avid solitaire player. Quite often
we reach an impasse where next move is not clear. For example if for or
five cards are stacked in the right sequence and then the enxt higher card
is aailable in another column sometimes the game will not allow you to
click on the group of cards and move the block over. Clicking help may or
may not give a useful hint. Sometimes the computer recommends a move of
one card then the next move reverses the exact same move you just
completed. This happens even when another legal move is available, but the
computer disallows this.

How would I go about documenting a specific situation that is dozens of
moves into a game? Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

TIA

Arild Jensen

Hi there.

I understand what you mean; it is impossible to recreate this exact scenario; solitaire is built not to be the same every time.

However, after playing five games, this bug is still not confirmed. Each time I had enough cards in a stack, I moved them across and had no problems.

The hint system seems to rely on luck a bit ('Deal a new card from the deck' three times in a row means you will still probably lose.

Please run the following command;
sudo apt-get remove gnome-games && sudo apt-get install gnome-games

This will do a clean reinstall of the gnome-games package. Please try this, and try to recreate the problem again, and then notify us of the result.

Thanks

Joseph

HELP! I am not familiar enough with UBUNTU to know how to bring up th
ecommand line into which t oenter the command.
My efforts simply resulted in repeated error messages saying it failed.
The software completely screwed up and I had to revert to ( blush) using
my windoze computer to get back to my web mail and reply.

Hey there Arild,
Don't worry it can be a little daunting at first.
Just go to your 'Applications Menu' then 'Accessories' and click on the 'Terminal'
A window will open up and you can type the command into the window. Once you have typed it, press the return key and it will ask you for your password.
As you type this no letters or *'s will appear, don't worry, this is normal.
As written it will then re-install gnome games.

I too have been unable to reproduce this bug. However since this is a card game I would reccomend running the following command in your terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal)

sudo apt-get purge gnome-games gnome-games-data gnome-cards-data && sudo apt-get install gnome-games gnome-games-data gnome-cards-data

It's a bit long, but you can copy and paste that right into your Terminal to make it easier. This should be the best way to reinstall your game packages. Please try it out, and post back here and let us know if the bug still exists.
