Bug Description

Hi !
I am on ubuntu 8.10 x64. I have installed nvidia drivers (177), it is working very well on the generic kernel.
But today, I tried to install linux-rt(2.6.27.3) : Xorg crashes : "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!"
If I boot on the generic kernel, all is ok.
My ubuntu installation is fresh so I don't know what I could do to fix this.
Thank you

This might not be a bug. You should recompile the nvidia driver module. The module for generic kernel will not work with rt kernel.

I think it is a bug. The only thing I see, is if I want to do computer music, I install the linux-rt kernel, and when I start on it, Xorg is crashing if I have previously installed the nvidia-restricted-drivers (which are proposed by ubuntu on first boot).

For now, it is impossible to do computer music easily on Ubuntu for people which has an nvidia card. We have no informations when X is crashing, and what we should do.

I already tried to play with nvidia driver sources in the past, recompiled it with the linux-rt kernel, etc. There was a lot of problems, I had to purge a lot of packages (all related with nvidia, like restricted-modules, which was a problem because it was disabling also other restricted drivers) Then the drivers was not working anymore. It is not a clean and easy way to have the linux-rt working.

I really need the nvidia restricted drivers to work because I would like to use the twinview function to do computer music.

Perhaps I should use Ubuntu Studio, but I think it is a shame to have to install two OS just for this problem.

dpkg -l linux-rt*

dpkg -l linux-headers-*

Alessio,

I confirm the bug, with nvidia nvs chipset, nvidia driver, hardy, and the newly updated kernel 2.6.24.24-rt.

I just come back to 2.6.24.23-rt, it works well.

in order to be more precise :

It works with kernel 2.6.24.23-rt + driver nvidia 1:96.43.05. (nviidia-glx)

It does not work with kernel 2.6.24.23-rt + driver nvidia 169.12 nor 173.14.12 (nvidia-glx-new, nvidia-glx-new-envy)

Do you want me to test with kernel 2..6.24.24 and latest nvidia drivers ? If it doesn't work I will have to buy and recommand ATI cards, wich with we can have basic 3D acceleration with the free drvier... And I won't be alone.

Alessio, I confirm the problem on the same computer using Jaunty Beta, its -rt kernel and the latest nvidia driver.

Gnome crash most of the time just after the GDM login, just before the panel appear on screen. Sometimes, a few minutes after login.

With the -generic kernel, I don't have any problem.

I am using Jaunty x86 with latest nvidia drivers (180.44) and I also cannot use linux-rt (2.6.27.3) with the Nvidia drivers, nvidia kernel module refuses to load and launches failsafe X.

Also tried 177 & 96 drivers to no avail.

Hello everybody out there!

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope x64 desktop version, with a nVidia Quadro 110M and the proprietary nVidia pilot version 180: X crashes after a few minutes.

   Best regards.

Hi all,

I do have the same issue on Jaunty x32 with a RT kernel.

It perfectly works on Jaunty generic x32

Nvidia 9600 GT 1.80 drivers

This bug priority should be increased when I see the number of people complaining on forums.

Bug #366352 is probably related. In comment #7, a user offers a custom compiled kernel that solves the incompatibility with the nvidia driver
(see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-rt/+bug/366352/comments/7).

This might be worthwhile investigating.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that could be fixed in the Beta release of Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it! Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Confirming the same issue on Karmic's rt kernel on 64bit.
X's log reports that the nvidia drivers were not found. DKMS seems to have done it's job during the install tho.

Tried with Alessios's latest 2.6.31-8.10 as well, and the issue remains.

I'll take a deeper look when I have the time, but won't be for another few days.

Vik

Just a follow up on the above:
The nvidia driver update which came thro today seems to have fixed the issue in Karmic.
The rt kernel is looking good now.

Hi all,

I tried the linux-rt 2.6.31.9.10 (headers - 2.6.31-9.152) in 64-bit 9.10 RC with the 185 drivers.

Unfortunately the machine hangs before getting to desktop. The system appears completely unresponsive - I cannot Ctrl-Alt to a different tty.
