Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10, pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1

I get the folowing error when I try to connect to my yahoo account.

Could not establish a connection with the server:
Access denied: HTTP proxy server forbids port 5050 tunneling.

I am forced to connect through proxy, the campus network doesn't allow otherwise.
It used to work ok in Ubuntu 8.04, except of course for the common buddy icons problem.

Thanks

PS. I'd use the 'Report a Problem' feature, but I'm guessing it also doesn't work because of the proxy.

Thank you for taking the for this report. The error message you quote "... proxy server forbids..." means the proxy server you are forced to use has locked down access to a port like 5050. This is not an issue in Ubuntu or Pidgin but rather a security enforcement on your university lan. Please talk back to your network administrator.

I am closing this bug for now.

Hi

As you said, my network is indeed very restrictive, but that doesn't stop the official client Yahoo! Messenger from working ok under Windows XP on this same computer. If communication over 5050 were required by the the Yahoo protocol, Yahoo! Messenger should be blocked too. To my this seems clearly a problem with Pidgin.

I've opened up the bug again.

Thanks for reporting back. Please check the following document:

It seems you can also use port 80 instead of port 5050. Please try using the pidgin yahoo account configuration menu for using one of the ports listed on the web page. If that works for your, report back please.

From the link you gave me, I understand you want me to configure my proxy to allow those ports. Unfortunately, I am not an administrator here, the only thing I can configure is how pidgin connects to the internet. In my case, it has to go through http proxy 10.8.1.1:3128.

Looking at the account configuration menu (advanced tab), it seems like 5050 is the pager port (whatever that is) used by Yahoo in Japan. So normally, I wouldn't even need it.

I don't think Caspar Mierau meant that u change ur proxy settings as an administrator ...
All is meant is to change the "Pager Port" in Pidgin itself the default one is 5050, which in ur case is not working,
SO change it to one of those 20,23,25,80,119,8001,8002
(from Accounts>>Mange Accounts then select ur Yahoo account >>Modify (down)>> switch to Advanced tab)
There u will find Pager Port

Just a small thing to add:
I used to have the same problem with Pidgin 2.5.5 (Ubuntu Hardy 8.04) for some unknown reason and when i changed the Pager port it worked well (i used 20 and 119 and both worked)

Sorry, I'm out of country for another couple of months, and I can't
reproduce it here, but I remember clearly that I tried port 80 without any
luck.

I deleted the duplicate mark (of bug #389322) that you added on 19 June 2009 18:59. Please read more carefully when sorting bugs. The summary clearly states that my bug is related to connection from behind a proxy server.

From the link andra provided, it appears that Pidgin 2.5.7 is needed to work with Yahoo. Does anyone know if there's a timeline by when it might be available for jaunty?

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
