Bug Description

build: gnome-cups-manager 0.31-1.1ubuntu1

I have an Minolta Magicolor 2400W Color Laser Printer.

According to linuxprinting.org, the m2300w driver from sourceforge.net is required to get the printer working. I have downloaded and installed the latest version (m2300w-0.51.tar.gz) [worked, however I had to add some additional permissions].

In gnome-cups-manager, the printer was detected correctly. When adding the printer, the m2300w driver was recommended and the printer added.

However, the test page didn't print. When looking at the properties dialog, the printer model no longer 2400W, but 2430DL and the assigned driver was foo2zjs (which is known not to work with the 2400W).

The attached file has been generated by calling

gnome-cups-manager >>protokoll.txt 2>>protokoll.txt

from the command line, adding the printer and looking up the property dialog.

- did you try to use the foo2zjs package included in ubuntu?

I did try the foo2zjs package, but it didn't work. The issue apparently is not that there is a bad driver but that even after selecting the correct driver (m2300w), this selection somehow gets lost.

According to

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/

Minolta Magicolor 2400 W

is not supported (that printer doesn't use Zenographics ZjStream wire protocol ).

I'm using dapper 20060415.
This printer needs m2300w driver which is not included in ubuntu or debian. So you should not be able to select m2300w driver.
This printer/driver is not listed on my computer in gnome-cups-manager using the latest foomatic-filters-ppds 20060406-0ubuntu1.
Does gnome-cups-manager still detect your printer and suggest 2300w driver after latest dapper printing updates?

On my desktop machine, I did install m2300w from sf.net (I have tried both the source distribution and the rpm via alien). The issue is still there with the latest release.

On my notebook, I didn't install m2300w. I don't have access to that machine right now. I will check it as soon as this machine is available again.

However, this isn't related to the issue that has been reported. The issue is that is possible to select a driver, but gnome-cups-manager but the selection is not accepted.

The magicolor_2400W-m2400w.ppd contains *Manufacturer indication "KONICA MINOLTA", while gnome-cups-manager uses indication "Minolta" which is also used by Foomatic.
Gnome-cups-manager will match "KONICA MINOLTA" to "Minolta" and look for you printer model there, since it isn't there it matches the one that closely resembles it, in your case magicolor 2430 DL.
Please note this is only a viewing problem in the Properties > Driver tab of gnome-cups-manager, this does not affect the functioning of the printer since the PPD was installed correctly.
To prove this you could change the *Manufacturer indication to "Minolta" by editing /usr/share/cups/model/magicolor_2400W-m2400w.ppd.
Then remove your printer in gnome-cups-manager and add it again and look in the Properties > Driver tab, you will see that the correct driver is indicated.

If I understand correctly you printer works except for the gnome-cups-manager "Test Page"?
If this is the case please attach your /var/log/cups/error_log after you pressed the "Test Page" button.

Confirmed that renaming "KONICA MINOLTA" to "Minolta" works for another victim.

With m2300w package, the Magicolor 2400w works nicely, althought I had to select "Minolta" as manufacturer in gnome printer dialogue, which is confusing since the box has "KONICA MINOLTA" on it. Could the contents of m2300w become part of foomatic database that is installed normally? It will not work out-of-box without the package being installed by the user.

We have changed the default print management system in Ubuntu from gnome-cups-manager to system-config-printer because g-c-m is no longer maintained. When adding a new printer I now see three relevant options: KONICA, KonicaMinolta and Minolta, so I'm not sure that's better :)

Improved auto-detection might save the day though. Could those who have this printer please try configuring it on a clean Gutsy or Hardy system (Live CD should do) and let us know how badly/well this works in real life? Thanks!

This has been confirmed in bug #64046, further comments regarding that specific issue should be added in that bug report.

In system-config-printer everything is OK. If there are magicolor 2300w/2400w printers around labeled both "Minolta" and "KONICA MINOLTA", the driver package should ship PPDs with both manufacturer names. The Foomatic database coming with Ubuntu does not ship PPDs for this driver, as the driver itself does not make part of the standard installation.
