Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

This is an old problem still unresolved fully. The way it manifests for me is, for example:-

Go to news.bbc.co.uk

File>Print Preview works and shows the images.
File>Print (without changing any settings) prints with black rectangles where the images should be.

That is clearly a bug when preview and print display different results.

However File>Print then choose the Options tab, check the Print Background check box and then print and the images are printed as per the Preview.

I first reported this to the cups project. They sent me this reply:

From Till Kamppeter

QUOTE:
bwallum, you are hit by a Firefox bug. I have visited the site you mention and then I have chosen to print to a file in the printing dialog (first entry of the printer list). I have tried with both the PostScript and PDF output formats and get black images in both cases. So the data arriving at CUPS when choosing to print to a real printer is already broken.

Please report a new bug for the firefox package.
ENDQUOTE

I have attached my printer set up and files used. The bug is repeatable every time for me. I'm running the latest updates for Intrepid as of 18th November 2009

when you print out some web pages, some images remain blank on the print media
- the images will show up in the print preview
- "print background images" option is checked
- i tracked it down and stored this self-explanatory html document at the url mentioned:

<html><head>

<title>div border vs. image printing / aka "How many Bulps are there ?"</title></head><body>

<!-- two cases of "vanishing images", both striped down to the minimum bug triggering requirements -->
<!-- when you print this page (cups/"print to pdf" will do), the first and and the second bulp will be missing -->
<!-- (hope you will be able to reproduce, as it's really tricky - e.g. the first bulp shows up if i
      change "width:800px" to "width:500px) -->
<!-- (i have no clue, why this happens) (discovered on google notebook for the curious) -->

<div style="width:800px">
<div style="border-top:1px solid">
<img src="http://www.hostanyimage.com/files/3tq1l4cs6dzxc3egq7r4.jpg">
</div></div>

<div style="border-left:1px solid;border-bottom:1px solid">
<img src="http://www.hostanyimage.com/files/3tq1l4cs6dzxc3egq7r4.jpg">
</div>

</body></html>

Reproducible: Always

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest version of Firefox 3.0? Thanks in advance.

Neither can I reproduce it at the moment... seems to be gone. This particular case at least... I can't exactly remember now but I think I had a similar issue again lately. Anyway - I won't mind if this bug was closed for now.

I have revisited this bug report and now find it no longer valid. I am using Jaunty AMD64 and Firefox 3.0.11

The problem seemed to relate to a CUPS driver for the HP Color LaserJet 3600n. On normal resolution it would not print graphics from the BBC News web site, on high resolution it did. The driver is HP Color LaserJet 3600 Foomatic/pxljr [en].

Now graphics print on both normal and high resolutions as expected.

I no longer think my bug report is valid and should be' squished'.
