Bug Description

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 6400 with Intuos3 9x12 tablet (USB)

Steps to reproduce:

Set up the wacom driver using XOrg.conf (to enable tablet buttons), as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WacomTroubleshooting

xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key ctrl alt left"
xsetwacom set pad Button7 "core key ctrl alt right"

Press tablet buttons 3 and 7.

Expected behaviour:

Keyboard event for ctrl+alt+left and ctrl+alt+right would be generated, which in turn would switch the virtual desktop. (Confirmed with keybindings).

Actual behaviour:

Depends on the Ubuntu version:

Under 7.10, worked as expected

Under 8.04, these buttons would cause a crash (an unrelated bug that was reported as being to do with the lack of a core keyboard), so I couldn't test if they worked.

Under 8.10:

If a gnome-terminal has focus, the keys generate keyboard D and C. If a Firefox text area has focus, nothing appears to happen. Nothing is logged to syslog, Xorg.0.log or dmesg.

Hi ubuntubugs-rjlee,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Hi there,

Sorry for the extremely long delay in my reply.

I'm re-opening this issue as the problem does still persist, and I have attached my xorg.0.log file as requested.

I should probably also note that I have used the following key settings:

xsetwacom set pad Button1 "core key tab"
xsetwacom set pad Button2 "core key f11"
xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key ctrl alt left"
xsetwacom set pad Button4 "core key alt"

xsetwacom set pad Button5 "core key tab"
xsetwacom set pad Button6 "core key shift tab"
xsetwacom set pad Button7 "core key ctrl alt right"
xsetwacom set pad Button8 "core key alt"

and that holding down button 4 and pressing button 1 does cause windows to shift, so I do know that some buttons are working.

I will download Jaunty alpha 3 this evening and see if I can reproduce on that.

I have also discovered that if I hold down tablet button 3 or 7, and press left or right, then the virtual desktop does switch. Which lead me to try other combinations:

xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key left"

- button 3 acts as left cursor. I can hold down ctrl+alt and use it to shift the desktop to the left, or press it to move the text cursor left in a terminal.

xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key alt left"

- button 3 generates a D character in a terminal. Holding down ctrl or alt while pressing it makes no difference. Holding down button 3 and pressing keyboard left generates one left event on the first press, then subsequent presses of left generate D characters.

xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key ctrl left"

- button 3 moves the terminal cursor left one word. Holding down alt and pressing button 3 generates a D character for each press of button 3. Holding down button 3 and pressing alt+left shifts the desktop to the left.

xsetwacom set pad Button3 "core key alt ctrl"

- Works as expected: button 3 has no immediate effect. Holding it down then pressing left (or right) shifts the desktop. Holding down left then pressing button 3 also shifts the desktop.

So it looks like the problem might be something to do with using modifiers and normal keys in the same button?

Thank you for reporting this issue with wacom-tools, we are migrating it to the new xf86-input-wacom package which has replaced it in the development version of Ubuntu.

This would be a good point for you to re-test this issue against the new package to see if is still occurring. If not, you can mark it as Fix Released in Launchpad. If it is still an issue in the current development release and you're the original reporter, please reply and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log.
