Bug Description

my X (UI) freezes as soon as I launch a video or run glxgears. I have
just set up an ATI radeon HD 2600 graphic card with ATI driver I
downloaded from the web. the driver I set up is: ati-driver-
installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run

I am running Ubuntu 8.04.
Graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 pro: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd2600/specs.html

Everything seems to work except when I try to run a video or
glxgears.I have tried to play the video with Video output set to X11
but the problem is the same. I look up on google and all forums. I do
not know what to do. Can anyone help?

my xorg.conf is:

LaToune, thanks for filing the bug report. Unfortunately unless you can reproduce this bug with a driver supported by Ubuntu, ie in the official ubuntu repositories, there's not much the devs can do to help. Alternatively you could file an upstream. Thanks again.

Thanks Michael.

1 - I initially installed the default driver proposed from the official ubuntu repository but got my X to freeze at login time (I was keying in user name and pwd and the screen was not getting to the desktop page).

2 - I then installed ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run as suggested in a few forums. I got to log in but as I mentioned the X freezes when playing videos.

3 - I removed ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run and got to set up the ATI driver using EnvyNG. It is my understanding EnvyNG is pulling drivers from the official ubuntu repository.

The problem remains...

HOW can I tell you what is the exact driver I have now set up on my computer?
Do you suggest I remove the driver again and I reinstall it from the Drivers set up tool in the Administration section?

thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware EnvyNG will download the latest driver from the
ATI website.

I've been trying to find a way to check the drivers on the system.
There doesn't appear to be one to do it directly. However, if you go
to:

menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers

This will list any proprietary drivers on your system. These of course
are unsupported by the Ubuntu development team.

I would agree that reinstalling the drivers through the repository
would be the best option. If you are still having problems file a bug
report against this.

It may also be worth trying out Ubuntu Ibex 8.10. You never know the
problem may have been solved in this version.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi Michael,

Thanks for you advices. I have uninstalled the ATI driver then got to reset the the ATI driver using menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.

It installed correctly and I managed to reboot and login without any problems :). Moreover I have managed to play videos fine this time. This looks good...

However when I run glxgears, the windows pops up and start displaying the wheels but it then freezes... I suspect this issue will be the same when I want to run 3D destop features which is what I want to do in the first place.

Any directions for resolving this issue?

When you say it freezes do you mean glxgears or the whole desktop? It might be worth trying desktop effects just to see what happens.

Just to confirm are you still running 8.04 or have you upgraded to 8.10?

If you've checked these things and still have problems it would be best to file a new bug report. Then change the status of this one to 'invalid', as the earlier use of unsupported drivers confuses the issue.

Leave a comment here with the new bug report number (available in the top left corner) and I'll try and help with the new bug report.

Just to clarify. I'm not a developer so can't solve the bug directly. But will help to make sure the report is filed correctly increasing the chance of a fix.

Thanks

thanks Michael. I have un-installed driver using envyng -t and then reinstall the default ATI driver from the Gnome UI. It is now working... (don't ask me why). However the system is sometimes freezing out of the blue... I will keep monitoring it and may report another bug when I gather more information.

Was running an unsupported driver. I reinstalled supported driver and it worked however the supported driver did not work out of the box. I suppose the changes I made to menu.lst or xorg.conf file fixed the problem that experienced in the first place.
