Bug Description

I have bad problems video problems with ubuntu 8.10 64 bit after a fresh install. This is a dual boot pc with windows and the same video problems are not showing their. This laptop has installed 5.04 to 8.04 without the same problem.

I have attach the following screen shots with the problem.

This was also the case after 8.04 to 8.10 32 bit distribution upgrade.

This problem goes away after dual booting into windows xp home. So problem is with the sis driver ?

I can also comment after looking at my png files from another system. that it is the monitor only. This issue doe not show up with a dual boot with windows xp. I will try 32 bit version

Hi warrenalmonte,
looks like you forgot to attach the file:p Don't worry, i was going to ask you for more files anyway.

So, please find and attach:
* /var/log/Xorg.0.log
* /etc/X11/xorg.conf
* ~/.xsession-errors (if you have one. look in your home directory)

Could you test with another monitor, and see if the problem remains? Because if it does, the bug is probably in the driver only and the monitor is not involved.

Thanks again.

Hi,
just found your last reply in my junk-box. This answer-to-launchpad-bugs-by-mail feature doesn't always work, especially when attaching more than one file at once, so your last reply didn't reach your bug report...

Perhaps you could attach your photos again?

So this only happens with the laptop screen? This should probably mean there is a bug in the combination of video card and monitor, or in monitor detection, i think.

I too own an Aspire 5003 and am experiencing the same problem; it appears to get worse over time. Anyway a temporary fix is to change the Device section of xorg.conf as so:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) SiS Default Card"
# Driver "sis"
        Driver "vesa"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
The vesa driver however leaves you in 800x600. I hope a solution to this problem is found soon and will update if I find anything. Note: This also puts my screen at a weird 61Hz though there does not appear to be a problem with that on my screen at least. Problem is definitely in the sis driver.

Thank you Daishi for the update.

Magnus version 8.04 works fine no driver problems with this version.

This screen problem is also on linux mint latest build.

I will stick with 8.04 until their is a resolution thanks

I have a similar situation--SIS VGA, Ubuntu 8.10 32bit.

Some interesting lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(II) SIS(0): SiS driver (2005/09/20-1, compiled for X.org 1.5.0.0)
(II) SIS(0): Copyright (C) 2001-2005 Thomas Winischhofer <email address hidden> and others
(II) SIS(0): *** See http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml

Is this an old driver? 2005 seems like it was a while ago. Just a thought. Does anyone have a Xorg.0.log file from 8.04, which seems to like the sis driver.

I have found a solution to this problem

post found here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=961964 (To give credit to forum member "graham-cracker"

After some web searching and with the help of:
sudo lspci -v

It looks like sisfb (a required module for my graphics card) is not being loaded on startup.

A temporary fix was to:
Switch to a different terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2)
Insert the sisfb module (sudo modprobe sisfb)
Switch back to X (Ctrl-Alt-F7)
Restart X (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace)

This appears to fix the problem (until you restart). If this works for you, than add sisfb to your /etc/modeules file so that it is inserted on boot like so:
Open a terminal
type: sudo nano /etc/modules
Add the following line to the end of the file:
sisfb
Save and exit (Ctrl-X)
Restart and see if it works.

This bug affects Lucid Lynx beta. Fix I posted on 2009-07-14 still applies. Adding the sisfb module to modules file fixes issue.
So when a clean install happens the sis vga card is not being detected on the aspire 5000 screen is not configure properly.
