Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Are you able to boot into recovery mode? Does grub work?
Do you have access to a LiveCD?
Do you remember what packages were updated?
Are you using 7.10? 8.04? 8.10?

sorry about that the 8.o4.1 i had downloaded from the net installed it no problem on the top showed me new downloads available so i took the package and downloaded it was a few but when i tried to start it i got a second menue with 5-6 options and tried them all but it would not start couldn't find a lot of files i am sorry i can't give you the exact message, As i have xp pro and vista on my pc i didn't want to try it again grub did not work either, i restarted my other systems are ok but no chance to get back in Ubuntu i found it a super idea and very simple to understand and all worked ok i have installed it again fresh, but the updates i think i will leave alone at the moment, i will try it on another hard drive, but thanks for the answer and so quick it will be a system for everybody to use and easy to understand if i get the same problem i will write a bit more information on it or if you think i shoud use a diferent version ? please tell me.
Thank you.

Fred, thank you for the information. Unfortunately, it is not detailed enough to understand your problem.

Your original problem, if I read it correctly, is that your system fails to boot into Ubuntu. However, it successfully boots into XP and Vista. You installed Ubuntu, and successfully booted into Ubuntu at least once. The boot failures began after an Ubuntu update.

Did you boot into Windows after the update? If so, do you have XP's Dynamic Disk Partitioning enabled? See bug 26058 for a workaround.
Do you have a RAID array? If so, see bug 112239

I'm closing this bug until you or someone else has the same problem, since we will not be able to reproduce it until you try Ubuntu again and provide the information we need.
