Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

An update fixed the bug and I am able to get it to work but I had to do
some funny things for it to work.

Thank you,

Michael

When I change some options like "force old port 5223 (checked)" and connection server (talk.google.com) it works

After some updates in 8.10 I got it to work. You have to set it up a
special way. It works the same way on Jaunty too. I have that now. Here
is what you have to do for google apps email accounts.

My email address is <email address hidden> so here is what I had to set.

username michael
domain kerputer.com
resource gmail.com
enter your password

Then on the advanced tab
choose require ssl
leave the connect port to the default 5222
enter talk.google.com in the connect server

then it works like a champ.
