thank you for your bug report, not confirming on intrepid though, gvfs didn't change a lot between hardy and intrepid and the new version is still fast there, do you get the issue when using gvfs-ls too? what nautilus configuration (list or icon view, what zoom setting, etc) do you use?

Hi,

First it's the number of files which seems to slow down Nautilus. Please try to reproduce the error with a directory > 2500 files.
I tried it with gvfs-ls, ist's fast, the gvfs-ls takes < 1 sec for these 2500 files. Nautilus is working at least 30 seconds and in this time CPU load is high. The remote machine is idle. No difference if I have Icon view or list view.

thanks

the issue doesn't seem to be a gvfs ssh one, could you try to open a such directory locally?

Hi Sebastien,

you are probably right. the Problem lies on the Nautilus side. I have the
problem also with opening local folders containing thousands of jpg's and/or
avi's. It's not a gvfs problem.
Opening a local folder with this content takes also minutes to open and
nautilus is using 90% of CPU while working.

P.S just checked with a notebook on 8.04, here the problem does not occour.

One more addition:
the problem is only existent in the Natilus "List view", the other both
modes are just working as expected.

there is no specific information required but lot of bugs and not so many bug triagers, the bug should be sent to bugzilla.gnome.org by somebody having the issue though

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in advance.

The problem is still there.
In the attached screenshot (usr-share-vnc.png) nautilus shows the contents of /usr/share/vnc after "flipping the triangles". When I then do File > New Window and then double click on vnc, nautilus hangs - the screenshot was taken after 1 minute!
I added testing with 9.04 to my todo list.

When doing some additional research I came across #159042.
I found that in both Intrepid and Jaunty disabling the Assistive Technologies (and logging out and in again) makes the problem go away.

Thanks DLC for this hint!
It's sad that this bug, which really can cause a lot of bad user expierience, is still there!
It was first reported in 2007!!!

I can confirm that the described workaround works for me!
You have first to turn Assistive Technologies off, logoff & logon.

Then nautilus works fast as expected even with thousands file and also over SFTP!

Thanks again!
