System Freezes up on webcam use

Bug Description

Using 5.10, when I try to access my webcam (logitech quickcam communicator stx), my system completely freezes. I tried using both camraorama and gnome-netmeeting tried running both with debug but they both lock up instantly upon starting.

Me too. Different webcam, same effect. Used to work under 5.04 with GnomeMeeting.
Webcam is a Sweex mini, and it shows up fine under HAL. Also, the messages and kernel logs indicate that it is recognised and modules are loaded.
However, when camorama or GnomeMeeting are started, the result is an instant system freeze. Virtual consoles aren't available, mouse doesn't work; a power switch job. Couldn't see anything in the logs between the loading of the drivers and the fresh restart after powering down...
If I go back a kernel version or two at the Grub stage I don't get a working camera, but I *do* get error messages from the apps and the system continues to run fine.

Same problem with Logitech Quickcam Communicator STX. Tried gnome-meeting and my entire system froze. Also noticed the same problem when accessing XSane. The camera's power light never turns off as expected.
