Bug Description
It does work, it does provide notification "baloons", and if I click around the tray I might even get its menu. However, there is nothing to be seen, perhaps like it has shrunken into a single pixel.
The system is Xubuntu Intrepid/8.10, upgraded from Hardy/8.04 (since first Intrepid Beta). It worked fine in Hardy, since the upgrade, the icon has vanished.

please ensure that there is nothing configured in /etc/network/ interfaces. NM wont manage your devices configured there by default and won't appear if there are no devices managable.
this is a dupe of bug 289466.
