Bug Description

In my experience Gaim's icon is visible. But XChat's not. If you set the panel horizontal, all tray icons are visible.

Also with Claws Mail plugins, Trayicon (http://www.claws-mail.org/plugins.php?branch=STD) is visible, but SysTrayicon of the Notification plugin (http://www.claws-mail.org/plugins.php?branch=EXT) is not (after restart). Maybe due to Trayicon using libegg and SysTrayicon using GTK.

Sometimes icons are sized to be 1x1. Sometimes icons are inappropriately large.

After setting the panel horizontal and back vertical, all icons are visible, but not after you restart the apps.

It doesn't really depend on the panel position for me, some tray icons don't really show up until the panel is restarted, or its config modified.

For me the above mentioned SysTrayicon is visible only in horizontal panel. To get it visible you have to change it vertical. No other change in config helps. How do you restart a panel?

I am using Hurdy, the Claws Mail plugin is available in claws-mail-multi-notifier package (version 3.3.1-1ubuntu1).

'xfce4-panel --restart' to restart the panel. It fixes an icon issue with skype here.

It does not work for the apps I mentioned.

I get this too with both sonata and guimup. In both cases icon is actually in systray but are badly scaled into 1x1 pixel size. You can see this with other items shifting a little in tray, or as is case with guimup, a one colored pixel appearing in tray. So this is most likely same scaling issue that sometimes causes huge updater icon in tray for me. Also other apps are affected by bad systray icon scaling, Deluge and pidgin to mention few.

Is this the same bug that was reported upstream as http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3233 ? If so it's been fixed in trunk for over a year now, but apparently didn't make it into the 4.4.2 release. Maybe the fix could be backported?

In 8.10 beta I see same behavior, but XChat's icon is oversized instead of 1x1, if started in vertical panel. Firefox icon in FireTray add-on seems to be unvisible.

Me too. In 8.10 beta unfortunately it is nm-applet, which sits in the tray but cannot be clicked. As Jarno explained, switching from vertical to horizontal and back again is a workaround.

I, too, get a 1x1 pixel nm-applet on every boot. This bug has been sitting here for over a year, it's fixed in upstream, but not in Ubuntu itself. I am very disappointed.

The other day I updated xfce4-panel to version 4.4.3.

Unfortunately this did not help.

@Ulf: You said it's fixed in upstream. Do you know which version / component ?

This is so annoying.

According to the Bugreport over at xfce.org ( http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3233 ), the bug was fixed in trunk around September 2007. I'm not closely following the xfce development, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. For now I'm not upgrading to 8.10, because of this and the xfce volume plugin bug.

I reported this on bugzilla.xfce.org. See http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4587 for details.
Basically Nick stated that he will not fix it in 4.4 as the bug (at least for for me) does not appear in 4.6 beta (4.5.91).

So it seems we have to live with it :-(

please mark my bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/302448 as duplicate for this. I think amount of duplicates shows how annoying this issue for xubuntu comunity.

At least it seems to be fixed in Xfce 4.5.99.1 (4.6 BETA3) which will be the version for Jaunty according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/.

Okay, thanks for the feedback (btw, Xfce 4.5.99.1 is Xfce 4.6 Release Candidate 1, not beta3 ;). Feel free to reopen this bug if you can reproduce it in jaunty.
