Could you please add the MPD_DEBUG=1 to the file /etc/default/mpd then run the command:
dpkg-reconfigure mpd

Could you please attach the file /etc/mpd.conf

Sorry I havent replied yet. But Im sorry to say that i have reinstalled the
system to an older version that worked.

I had this problem while installing mpd, I found that even after

apt-get remove mpd

the file mpd remained in /etc/init.d/
Upon deleting this file the instalation worked fine.
uname -r
2.6.27-10-generic
