User switcher applet layout incorrect on vertical panels

If the User Switcher applet is added to a vertical panel, the text gets rotate 90 degrees correctly, but the icon and the text are still positioned side by side instead of one above the other. As a result, both the text and the icon get clipped.

Low importance since it's a cosmetic bug.

I have installed the new fast-user-switch-applet (with integrated shutdown and IM functionality), but the IM status icon is displayed to the right of the pre-existing text-or-icon, even though I've got a vertical panel.
I'll attach a montage of screenshots. While the screenshots show the state of the applet while an IM program (in this case, empathy) is running, it's the same before running any IM program.

Here's also a picture of the switcher on a very narrow vertical panel (25px) without text - it doesn't scale at all, especially the grey area on the right side takes up half the space!

stacking user and status icon of the applet vertically would go a long way - or resizing them
