Bug Description

After clean install of mythbuntu 8.10rc alternate amd64, I have connectivity with my local network but can't connect to the web. Cabling and router check out fine on my other systems. Go the uninstall network-manager with apt-get install remove network-manager and all related packages are removed. Go to reinstall network-manager with apt-get install network-manager and get this -

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package network-manager is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package network-manager has no installation candidate

Go to synaptic package manager to install and get this -

network-manager:

Package network-manager has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list

I don't know if this is why I'm not getting on the internet but everything seems to be setup correctly

The motherboard does have an onboard nVidia 1gig nic but I am not using it because of the issues associated with 1gig nics.

I have installed/uninstalled this .iso several times with the same results.

If more info is needed I will be happy to supply it.

Can you please run:

apt-cache policy network-manager?

Also, i'm assuming you've done an apt-get update already?

I haven't ran apt-get update since I can't get to the internet. I was trying to reinstall network-manager from the .iso when I ran into this problem.

Here is the output from apt-cache policy network-manager -

That's quite an interesting scenario then. Can you grab the latest
daily image? These daily images should have an updated apt cache, so
hopefully this problem isn't occurring there.

/Pulled the daily build from 10/28/2008 and loaded it this morning. Ran two installs. First with a dynamic IP address and the second with a static IP. Dynamic IP installed as expected, with network-manager running properly. With the static IP install, network-manager did not run on start-up but connectivity to local network and the internet was established. Went to do a apt-get update but could not connect to Intrepid repositories. I'm assuming that they are not accessible do to Intrepid release tomorrow. Was able to access the repositories earlier this morning. It's now afternoon eastern standard USA. I'm not concerned about the network-manager not running because I usually uninstall it anyway, but seems odd that it's not working with static setup. If I can do anything further let me know

How did you configure the static IP? Directly in NM or manually via
/etc/network/interfaces?

Sorry but I tried to answer this by replying to your email. Guess that don't work. Anyway, when I setup the static and dynamic IP's I was doing it during the install. Since the release of Mythbuntu 8.10, I have downloaded and been trying to install it but getting the same results. If I install with a static IP, NM applet does not appear but is installed. Cannot run it from command line as sudo and have no connectivity beyond my local network. If I let the installation get an IP from DHCP then everything works with NM, applet showing up in the tray and connectivity good for local and internet network. I'm continueing to setup myth for the momment so I leaving the server with the dynamic IP but will be trying to change to static once I need to connect my slave FE's to it. If I can do anything else let me know. I'm assuming that you are pretty busy about now with 8.10 being so fresh.

After some investigation I discovered that with the choices I make with the installation of the Mythbuntu 8.10 alternate AMD 64 release, particularly a static IP, the resolv.conf file is created with only a comment in it. Once I edit it with the nameservers I use everything works as it should. the network-manager applet still does not appear but that is not necessary for the configuration I need to achieve. This still seems to be an issue since the resolv, conf file is essential for network connectivity.

OOTB NM is doing the right thing with desktop disks (and has a utility to configure static addresses). We're not supporting alternate disks for 9.04, so i'm closing up this bug.
